They're not going to improve their chances of winning by playing defensively, while their opposition are going great guns and smashing their bowlers around the park. The Indians have to respond by attacking the Aussie bowlers, but should be more effective and thoughtful. McGrath is tough, and you should take what you get, but the Indians shouldn't let the others get the better of them. Coem to think of it, the Indian bowlers shouldn't give away too many runs an over, either.
The top order batsmen should take Pathan's lead. He batted beautifully, in defence and attack. When defending he was looking rock solid, and when he decided to attack Warne, did so almost flawlessly.

It has to be considered that at the point, India had nothing to lose. They were out of the Test, a defeat was guaranteed.

However, I do agree Pathan has a good head on his shoulders. He showed that in Pakistan in that partnership with Yuvraj. I hope he gets opportunities such as those again, and comes good.

Adam Gilchrist for PM...

All hail the great Gilly who led his side to victory today. For those who haven't stumbled across his video diaries on his website, check it out (www.adamgilchrist.com) First hand insight into what's going through his mind before and after the game. I think he should have run for Prime Minister. I'd vote for him... what about you guys?

He did get some runs in Pakistan, in a live match, but was unlucky not to get 50. He can bat, and Boycott says that he has the talent, he has the temperament and a godo head on his shoulders. He should want to do well as a batsman. He can be a very useful player, being a strike bowler who can also get the team runs. This is a very good chance to add some depth to the batting lineup. He won't improve much if he has to bat at positions as low as 8 or 9. Maybe 7, or even higher in those exhibition series may do him a lot of good.

By exhibition series, you mean?

By exhibition series, you mean?
  1. Asia Cup
  2. Any series against Bangladesh, Zimbabwe or any other minnow side
  3. Any tournament held in Sharjah, Toronto, Singapore, Morocco, Nairobi or Holland
In fact, any ODI series not featuring the Australians will be a good time. One needs to look at how many ODI series the Indian team plays, some of them being unneccesary.

Ah ok. I agree then, maybe #7 on ocassions, but higher than that, I've my doubts...

In an ODI if Pathan and Agrkar play theres no reason why they can't bat 7 and 8 and play two spinners and three seamers if Pathan continues this form with the bat.

I'm hoping and praying India come back in this series. They SHOULD be the second best team in the world but theres no point saying that if they don't put the performances in. There is a danger that other teams (eg England and Pakistan) move forward while India lag behind and i'd hate that to happen. They have to at least draw this series and then beat South Africa.

A generic question, but what is wrong? Lack of team spirit? Or lack of great players? Or the effects of bad bureaucracy in the background coming on field?

Pathan needs practice, and it will take some years, but at the end, the team benefits.

Haha anything is better than what we've ended up with. :D

Regarding Pathan, I can't see why he can't be sent up the order on occasion in meaningless ODIs. Even Agarkar batted at 3 once and made a 90odd! However, Pathan shouldnt be put under too much pressure. After all, he's in the team as a bowler first, and under normal circumstances should not have to bat as he did today.

I think it was Keith Stackpole giving expert comments on the radio over here who said that he thinks Pathan could certinally get his batting up to the level where he could be considered a bowling allrounder. From what I've seen on TV he certinally looks like he has the potential. Of course I thought the same of Brett Lee for a while and now hes crap at both batting and bowling :P

For all this talk about technology, I think that the microphones and earpieces to make it easier for umpires to pick up edges should be implemented. In places like India and Sri Lanka you can barely hear a thing (and the umpire has it worse), and he can't make a good decision if he hasn't considered all the information e.g. heard a noise.

I actually think that could be of assistance and is fairly easy to implement.

Only problem is near the end of the game, when the stumps are switched.
