I don't think there's really a great answer to it. I originally typed "but I would've picked a different squad to begin with" in my post but I changed it to "but it still strikes me as a bit ehhh balance-wise" being pressing submit because I'm not really sure which squad I would've picked. It definitely stands out to me as being sub-optimal but I'm not sure it could've been made much better.

Maxwell in the squad might have made it a bit easier to get away with a hack combination for the fifth bowler, but I think he was still on mental health leave or only just coming back when they named the squad. I actually really rate Mitch Marsh as a fifty over player too but he wasn't bowling fit when they named it (and still kinda isn't).

His handful of WC overs were alright IMO, even if he bowled filthy offies for some of it. Also bowled pretty decently for NSW in a Shield game earlier this season.

His bowling days are probably largely numbered now because of Marnus but I think he came back from his ban a better bowler than he was beforehand.

Yeah that Shield game was weird, he didn't look terrible. But his overs during the Test summer looked like something I could have bowled

fwiw I think he's just as good at 3 or 4, and given the fact that our middle order options are not as good as the top order, it makes sense for him to bat 4 so we only need to play one of Iyer/Pandey/Jadhav.

Nah.. I think with Iyer there, we are covered for 3 and 4 IMO. We need to find good batsmen for the lower middle order who are multi-skilled. 5-8 is our problem. Not 1-4. So no need to fix what is not broken.

Jhye - injured when the squad was named
Dorff - injured for the last six months
Abbott - named in the squad, injured since
Haze - rested/injured recently
Patto - largely pointless risking him in ODIs when he's not really very good at them anyway
NCN - very unlikely to be around at the next WC given his age/injury track record

I would've picked him too. He's always been a fairly good even if slightly below ODI standard 50 over bowler, and that's absolutely what you get down to after that many outs.

Probably should've just held off naming the squad though...

Exactly, so bumping Kohli down to 4 allows us to put Iyer at 5, which helps alleviate that problem.

Otherwise you have a gun top 3 and then have to somehow get Rahul to change his game completely or settle for a lesser batsman. Not optimal. Might as well have a gun top 4 and a less poor lower middle order.
