A fitting end to an unpredictable series; Langer laughs as he's offered the light, quite prepared to stay out and wage war with Harmison once more, asks Hayden what he thinks, he reckons they may as well bugger off and get bladdered, the Ashes are gone.
I watched the last session down the pub in town, quite crowded, and most in there to see the end of the cricket; quite a few fellows walked past the pub window, put their hand up to their head to shield the light, saw the scorecard, then marched in to order their pint, sit down and watch history for an hour or so, perhaps only stopping to phone their respective spouses and proclaim, "ho there, tarry a little with our tea love, there's cricket to be watched, is junior watching? Well wake him up then!".. etc.
Incredible series. Best I have ever seen. Both teams played some delicious stuff, Flintoff became what a lot of us thought he might become all those years ago (although he was a batting all-rounder back then), Vaughan was magnificent as a skipper and showed touches of his old self with the bat, Trescothic didn't score a hundred but made runs and took on the new ball, Strauss made two hundreds and just looks all class, KP started brilliantly, faded a little but then returned with a magnifcent ton, not chanceless by any means but only the Warne one was a dead cert chance for me. Jonah bowled quick, reversed it and had an amazing series, Hoggy did his bit with the new cherry and Juan Carlos did what we expected, took vital wickets and made vital runs; ya boo sucks to the anti-Gilo brigade.
Aside from Freddie's MOTS award, the biggest cheer in the pub went to the old legends, it was reminicent of Ambrose and Walsh walking off at the same ground a few years back, as Warne and McGrath took off their hats at the Oval for the final time on English soil for Australia, we in the pub slowly put down our beers and applauded our tormentors, each of us recognising what legends we had witnessed over the years, and that we may never see their like again; huzzah. Warne received similar treatment from us when he took the Aus MOTS award, what a magnificent bowler and what a sportsman, in fact well done both teams for the spirit in which the series has been played.
I say the biggest cheer was for Fred but no, I am wrong. The biggest cheers went up as Mick lifted the urn, that tiny vessel, that magical vase and what it represents, was ours again, not for long maybe who knows, but for now and that is enough.
Well that was down the boozer, anyone actually go to the Oval?
