"UPDATE 1340 GMT: The covers are coming on now as there is a slight
drizzle. Although it might be interesting for fans to hear that
just about 4 miles north of The Oval play is on at Lord's in a
first-class match, Middlesex v Glamorgan."

If i remember correctly, only if both teams agree b4 the series to use lights will they be allowed in tests. This was the case a few years ago. Maybe the ICC decided to stop teams deciding series by series and just put a blanket ban on no lights at tests.
Its irrelevent anyway because the Oval doesnt have permenant lights anyway. (unless they put some up over the last 6 months without telling people lol).

They use lights in all test matches in Aus but that's because it's written into the playing conditions.

Unfortunately, the Oval has no lights and any such condition would be superfluous.
Wow, that just makes it even worse.

Giles and Flintoff were bowling, and the players never came back after tea on day two.

On day 3, the second time Australia turned tail and ran, it was once again the fearsome Giles who was operating from the Vauxhall End in tandem with Flintoff. On neither occasion did the umpires give England the option of playing two spinners.
They never asked.

Obviously, Ponting informed the umpires that he would be willing to whatever was necessary to keep play going. Vaughan wouldn't have done that and was bowling Flintoff, so the light was offered. It's not a very difficult one really, the circumstances are totally different.

Well, that makes any debate on the concept irrelevant then, at least as far as this match goes.

You talk some absolute rubbish at the best of times, but today you are exceeding even your own high standards.

If you weren't aware who was bowling at the time, how on earth are you aware what went on between umpire and captain?

Anyway, everyone should put their rule books back in the cupboard, and pay tribute to Flintoff. The day belongs to him, not the bad light. What a cricketer. What a performance today, and in this series. Really stood up when it counted.

And what is FaaipDeOiad excuse for disagreeing with you ?

Well, the match at Lord's is a 45-over waft in the National League, and it's actually in the mid-innings break at the moment.

Play to start at The Oval in 7 minutes time.

Play resuming in 5 minutes or so supposedly, still plenty of time left in this game when the ball is darting around and England having not much of a clue against Warne.

He's got more sense than to continue when he's in the wrong. You tend to shut up when you're right.

Probably explains why you never seem to shut up, I suppose.

But they're playing cricket, and light isn't an issue for them. You would expect that if it's bad enough to halt a test match, then it's definitely bad enough to halt some (relatively) insignificant domestic one dayer.

If I never shut up how would you figure that I "tend to shut up" ? :D
