Didn't someone (Tony Greig...?) appeal a day later? (I.e. appealed for the last ball of the previous day just before the first ball of the morning.)
It was WG Grace. Nobody appealed on the last ball of the day. That evening he had a drink with the batsman who said he had been a bit lucky nobody appealed.

Grace appealed the next morning and the umpire gave him out.

They've changed the laws since then.

Yeah, but even Ponting could tell it wasn't out. I'm not one to complain much, especially about decisions but that was bad.
Wasn't really talking about that, more pressuring the unpire into decisions.

In fairness, it isn't as if the Aussies haven't been doing it either.
It's a comment on the umpire, more than on the English. It was extremely, extremely poor. I do think this happens though, when a home team is dominating - Australia very much included.

Yeh you can appeal anytime before the next ball but not after an umpire has called time. thats the altered rule

I swear, Gooch on that Advanced Hair ad is the absolute splitting image of Baldrick off Blackadder. Not just in appearance either... he even sounds the same and has the same facial hair. :D

Was it Martyn or Punter that showed dissent?
Dunno for sure, although it seemed like Bowden was motioning more towards the departing Martyn in his conversation with Bucknor afterwards. Punting did speak to the umpire, but Martyn gave Bucknor a "WTF, you must be joking" look, and held it.

Yeah, greg has it right. The Tony Greig appealing at stumps thing you might be thinking of is when, at the end of a day's play, Alvin Kallicharan of the West Indies blocked the last ball, turned and walked off the field to the pavilion. Tony Greig then broke the stumps and appealed because the umpire had not yet called time when Kallicharan left his crease.

Heh heh... a little. His "cunning plan" doesn't seem to have worked as well for Warne as it has for him, though.

Baldrick could act though, Gooch is like a bloody plank.

anyone else think that ad is the biggest pile of crap out?
Yeah, completely agree, but I do love the look Warnie gets at the end when Gooch gives him the phone.

...and was he given out?

Perfect example of why playing normally is vital in this situation. Giles bowls two crap balls, Ponting belts them for four, field change and the pressure is lifted.

Yes he was, but Greig got absolutely blasted for it overnight in the press and by the West Indian team, and relented in the morning and withdrew the appeal and the umpire changed the decision.
