But maybe that's it, guys who play that sort of shot aren't always smart. It's a pretty low rent, low percentage, high look at me everyone type of option. Great T20 option, awful Test option. There's still more to it than that. Look at the field they set for Pant. There was 2 men back for the ramp/uppercut that leaves other gaps in the field that otherwise wouldn't be there. That's a benefit of playing, or threatening to play, those shots. If Pant were smarter he would have taken better advantage of that
Would that they were so easyCummins being selfish to get easy wickets against the tail to end up with better figures.
That's just standard shot selection which goes for any shot in the book. The idea that one particular shot has to be singled out as against the spirit of Test batting is silly. He played a shot that wasn't suited to the field, no more than a guy caught hooking does yet no one calls them ruining the game for some so this shot being singled out just doesn't stack up IMOBut maybe that's it, guys who play that sort of shot aren't always smart. You are right, incidentally, there is more to it. But I do think at times, and certainly India in the first innings were far too reactive to it. Australia probably put two men back because they know Pant will play it anyway, and he proved them right.
