the lack of variety is partly down to being scared of dropping senior players too.

our management had always overrated Southee and Boult (regardless of form) and underrated everyone else. that and we seem to select for day 1 all the time.

we should have had a real spinner and/or wagner playing today.

Kyle Jamieson has been looking like Jacob Oram for 9 months now - another Please Explain for Stead and bowling coach Jurgenson.

A real spinner yes. I think Henry had earned a shot after the way he’d bowled over the past year. But tbf, Wagner‘s never really stopped performing for NZ so I dunno, maybe you’re right.

Problem for them is copping it if England are 250/2 without your 3 and 4 all time wicket takers. Suppose you can argue management should be above that, but they never are.

This is nonsensical cricket. Basically begging England to score quickly while also taking away our wicket-taking options. We were actually looking fairly likely after the Lees wicket and then we just gave up? Isn’t this the exact mistake we made when Bangladesh beat us?
Do feel this is a weakness of Latham's captaincy compared to Williamson, as against Bangladesh. Tbh a lot of what Williamson does when finding wickets is tough, is to go defensive and keep the runs down. It seems to work quite often though and we're sure as hell not controlling the run rate this innings.

I get that we’re missing what Wagner provides, but I still think we’d be a hell of a lot better off if we stuck to conventional bowing with conventional fields. The whole bouncer thing is a Wagner-meme anyway, it shouldn’t even be on the table if he’s not playing. It’s like we’ve forgotten it’s a weird little thing we came up with a few years ago and not a standard tactic.

I think Henry had too. Going into this series the not playing much and slightly down on goodness Trent Boult was 5th on my NZ pace rankings.

But they're not gonna drop Boult, and tbf we're in England.

Just picked for day 1 I think.

I feel like both sides are playing like it’s an even game when NZ are still way ahead. Root needs to rein it in and play more naturally and NZ can afford more attaching fields.
Think this is spot on. Watching this session without context you'd never guess the bowling side had a 300 run lead.

Tbh, Boult’s looked the best of the bowlers for NZ in this game. Should have 2 or 3 to his name if his fielders would back him up.
fair. i was going off what i would have said at the start of the tour without the benefit of knowing whats gonna happen.
