New Zealand Off Season 2014

Cricketer Of The Year
Nah I reckon it's pretty big. Sort of player who can do it all on his own.

Williamson, Flynn, Harris, Styris, Mitchell, Watling for the top six then Southee, Boult, Aldo or an Aussie, Kuggs, Vettori for the attack. If you're feeling brave give Styris four overs and drop a seamer. I wouldn't be trusting Jono Boult or especially Ish in this.
Devcich is going to play :p

I hear you on Anderson, and it's true. Fact is though he hasn't really done that in his 20/20 career to date bar once.

Someone to bump the Luke Vivian thread IMO. Would love to know what became of him.
Can happily tell you the great man is enjoying a cricket-free existence in the UK, and is actually a considerable amount bigger than he was playing here (big in a holy **** way, not fat way). He's a PT somewhere around London. And his beautiful bride is a burlesque dancer/does naked book readings.

Corey J a big loss for sure, but IMO he's way overrated. Good player for sure, but not as brilliant as he's made out to be.

Sent an e-mail to Leggat regarding the Cachopa story. When I asked how Cachopa could be eligible in months, he replied:

"Evidently it is to do with backdating since he last played international cricket, which was 2010. I'm told that's the relevant date, not, say 2014."

I'm still not sure whether this is right, though I guess it's possible if Cachopa has been going up to England for 6 months every year to play league cricket.

You're a Santner fan, iirc. I'd like to think Santner's appraisal skills would be a bit like Neesham's, and he might use his brain to outperform the more hard-handed and bullying ND players in the Champions League

Leggat might not quite realise that the ECB have the own laws on top of the ICC laws.

It may be true that he technically started his residency earlier that we realise though, and if he started it before 2012 then the seven year qualification period doesn't apply to him as it wasn't made retrospective. Instinctively I don't think you'd be able to start your residency while still playing overseas as a local player though...

3.1 Regulations Governing the Qualification of
Cricketers for England

Subject to the overriding discretion of the ECB, acting
with the consent of the International Cricket Council, a
Cricketer will only be qualified to play for England in a
Test Match or in a One Day International Match if:

(a) he is either a British citizen or an Irish citizen; and

(b1) he was born within England and Wales; or

(b2) he has been resident in England and Wales for the
immediately preceding four consecutive years if his
residence commenced prior to his 18th birthday and or
seven years if his residence in England and Wales
commenced after his 18th birthday; and

(c) he has not during the immediately preceding four
consecutive years either (i) played cricket for any ICC Full
Member Country outside the EEA at U17 level or above,
or (ii) played First Class Cricket in any such Full Member
Country except as an overseas cricketer under local rules

(d) In the case of a Cricketer seeking to become qualified
through residency above he will (until he has become
qualified to play for England) only be treated as having
been resident within England and Wales for the relevant
consecutive period if he has spent a minimum of 210
days in each year within England and Wales (for which
purpose "year" shall mean a year ending 31st March).
There is just no way Cachopa is going to be eligible any time before 2018 and I dare say it'll be 2021 instead.

Steve providing the goods on one of the cult heroes of the CW NZ contingent. Good stuff.

This is one of the greatest posts of CW history. Many are the days I have mused over what has become of Luke Vivian.
He was very nearly a world beater but for his inability to deal with yorkers but then again who can handle them well.

You're right, actually. Completely forgot about Santner. Chuck him in at 7, with that mystery #10 spot dying off.

is a pretty strong T20 tail.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Is he still eligible to play for NZ in the six years until he switches? If he's an 'overseas player' for NZ domestic domestic does that also affect if he can play for NZ?

Yeah we don't know what his family organised for him, re: permanent NZ citizenship. That would spare him all the 'resided in NZ for 183 days, for four straight 12-month periods' carry-on, iirc.

I think the Auckland CEO's sympathetic murmurings about him and reference to "short to medium-term" suggests it's all a big con anyway, tbh. He's still a Kiwi, he's just strolling freely around Colditz with a German guard's uniform on.

Nah NZC will just keep it at two I guess. The can't really make it all touristy like the Caribbean comp, and would need to play HRV games at 4am to get an Asian broadcast deal.

I'm suprised the Tridents are allowed to do that with Franklin tbh. I thought the whole idea of Otago getting Brett Lee over to Dunedin was because the guy had to play at least one domestic game for you beforehand. Maybe they were granted an exemption due to losing Dwayne Smith and Shoaib Malik to other teams.
