Interesting to note that all four of his Test Centuries have been at Kolkata.

(If that's wrong, blame Ceefax).
What ??

He has 1 century in Sydney, 1 in Antigua and 2 in Calcutta.

I just can't get over the irony that I'd gone on about his inability and he goes and does that - I still think he's over-rated though :D

Oh no, he's rated right. He is nowhere in the top ten and is actually at 20th place right now in the PriceWaterhouse ratings which is about right. So you can't say he is overrated.

The hype given to him by the English commentators this summer did not befit someone ranked around 20th in the world, hence he has been talked up as better than he actually is.

Domestic records aren't anything to go by. Especially not in India, there appears to a lacking of top class bowlers currently. Look at Zaheer and Nehra, in the Indian teams with averages hovering around 40.

I know, I wasn't using his Domestic Record for anything, I was just saying that it is very impressive! Anyway whenever I've seen Laxman he's been very impressive except in ODIs and hes definatly a better batsman than Ganguly who scores the 20s and 30s that Laxman does...but its been a long time since he's scored a big hundred.

Purely based on natural talent, Laxman will be second only to Sachin in this Indian team.

With respect to temperament, he used to be very suspect in his first outing in tests, but in his second coming, he seems to have improved in that aspect as well. He still has a tendency to throw away his wicket after getting well set, but it is less frequent now.

As per his value to the Indian test team, I think he is the 3rd most valuable player in the team after Sachin and Rahul. Ideally, he should come in before Ganguly in tests.

Well he scored all his runs in the Aus series at Number 3...then suddenly the selectors think his best position is number 6 and leave him there! I'm surprised he's even scored the ammount of runs he has as he has had to bat with the tail and sometimes will get out trying to get runs or rotate the strike. I think number 5 is his position, at the very least! Here you have a player who on his day can dominate any team stuck with batting with the tail! Although there are many other reasons Ramprakash who is a natural number 3 was stuck with batting with the tail for most of his career...thats not the best way to treat one of your most talented batsmen! Because Dravid and Tendulkar have made the number 3 and 4 positions their own I think Laxman should come in at 5. If Dravid wasn't doing so well I'd say Laxman for number 3. If you've got someone so talented they should be batting higher up where they can take the bowling attack apart!

I agree. However, there is no basis for a comparison between Laxman and Ramprakash(however indirect it was) just because they both batted a lot with the tail. Ramps can't hold a candle to Laxman.

Hick is the champion of overrated players. He gives full meaning to that word. You can't seriously be comparing Hick to Laxman.

I think putting Lazman and Rampers on equal footing with regards to pure talent is about right. Rampers has the shots but, as has been stated already, his fear of failure means he doesn't bring them out often enough.

Laxman is just stronger in mind, which is the difference in their cases.

VVS Laxman is a very nice player to watch in full flow. Very elegant and stylish. He has all the strokes, the late cut, the cut, the pull, the hook, the drive, the leg glance. He has it all, and is very much one of the sweetest timers of the ball in cricket. India's lucky to have this guy.

Ive always respected Mark Ramprakash, unfortunately he hasnt had the best time of it in tests.

By the way, Zaheer Khan averages 36 with the ball, and to me is a very impressive bowler. Zaheer when he first came on the scene used to touch 150 kph regularly, but injuries and doctor advice made him become a "slower" bowler.

Zaheer's yorkers are excellent, just talk to Steve Waugh!

I wasn't, I was pointing out that Rik basing Laxman's greatness on domestic record was a flawed method of judgement, especially considering the career averages of Indian batsmen in domestic cricket are higher than anywhere in the world in general.
