Picking Taylor and Lawson after a few games is what I would call lucky. And how is Dwayne Smith and Edwards lucky per se?
Edwards was picked after 1 FC game and he took 1 for 40odd I believe! Lara asked for him in the team because he was impressed with him in the nets. If that's not lucky...

Dwayne Smith played a fair amount of FC games (over a season) but had just one century to his name and that was the only time he crossed 50 in FC cricket. He averaged 21! He was picked as a specialist batsman, which blatantly states that he was about as lucky as the likes of Devon Smith and Ryan Hinds were unlucky.

But after 42 FC matches and 88 OD matches, you'd have liked him to express that potential as results by now. His stats are laughable for one rated so highly.

Yes, I agree, his FC stats most certainly are. I would have hope him to express it too by now.

His OD stats are, however, very good. Check them out.

At the time Lou Vincent was picked for test cricket, NZ hardly had any batsmen who were really good enough for test cricket.

But still...his averages were hopeless in both forms of the game for Auckland & if he had come along now..there's no way he'd be near the team with the likes of Papps, Fulton, Taylor etc emerging.

What about James Anderson getting called up?
He impressed me a lot when I saw him play for Lancs a while before his test debut.... I didnt think it was too "out of the blue"

Then check how many games he's played and how many of those are ODIs. You'll deduce that he made 92*, 1 and 0 before being called up to the senior side. Not very impressive. Besides, his avge is only 28.87.

He had only played three OD games for Lancs when he was called up to play Australia.

He came via the acadmey AFAIK.

I first herd of him when David Lloyd said about his pace and this and that the other about Anderson. Lloyd also said he should of been in the Ashes squad which I was amazed to hear.

You really haven't seen much cricket, have you?
Alright, maybe I got a bit carried away, but there's no need for that.

However you didn't see him play in Australia, did you? It was hilarious to watch him. I'll admit he's not always bad, but that series was pathetic.

I dont think Ronnie Irani is quite as bad as some of you are making him out to be.

IMO by county standards he's a pretty good allround cricketer.
But I see no place for him in the England side....and Richard I wont pretent to be a fan of Ian Harvey's but yeah he's better than Irani :P

With the bat I think Irani has some decent credentials , he's strong & hits the ball well , plays most of the shots in the book & has a pretty sound temperament.
Remember in the warm up matches before the VB series last summer....he looked Englands best player in all honesty , he bowled well against Australia A & made a quick 70 & 40.
But his batting is haunted by several major technical flaws , his back foor dosent tend to move alot , he'll often just plant his front foot down the line at the point of delivery & play across it , meaning he has trouble with the short ball & the full straight ones speared in at the stumps , as evidenced by how often he was out lbw.
He is able to get away with these flaws at county level but on the international stage they are brutally exposed.

As for his bowling it can be decent on slow/low pitches or the old fashioned English seamers (I reckon he'd be a great bowler in New Zealand.....slow & seaming) , as he can swing the ball.
But his action is also technically very flawed...he bowls off the wrong foot & dosent really come over the top & follow through correctly , thus he bowls a tad slower than I do & his control is nothing special.

His attitude is great ... he loves the game.
But his feilding sucks.....end of story.

Parthiv Patel...This kid got in at the age of 18...:O
17, wasn't it?
I remember pretty well, because he's only a few months older than me.
Anyway, he was really lucky, yes, but the sad thing is there have been stacks of boys who've been every bit as fortunate.

Very much so. 3 OD games, with not-outstanding results, and suddenly he's playing ODIs.
Then selecting him for Tests backfired big-time.

'Big-time'?

Averaging only just over 30 is not big time.

Nope, but the fact that someone who, had he been picked in maybe 2005, would quite possibly have gone in and averaged 25-6 from the start is big-time.
Now that will probably never happen.
