I think kyear was talking about people picking Imran or Hadlee in ATG teams for their batting, not real cricket selections.
Philosophically, not literally.

There were some conversations I had with Luffy last year where he openly advocated for always going for the better batsmen. The notion of choosing your bowling attack based on batting is just something I've never agreed with.

But was watching a podcast today and someone did say that things may have gone better overall if they had selected their bowlers to take 20 wickets rather than add lower order runs, but 🤷🏽‍♂️

Manjrekar said that and he is right because India picked bits and pieces newbies down the order who can't be relied on.

Marshall. Hadlee. McGrath. Ambrose. Steyn. Donald. Imran. Lillee. Garner. Akram. Holding. Trueman. Lindwall. Davidson. Pollock. Walsh.

Maybe I forgot 1-2 names but think Bumrah ranks ahead of everyone else. He is also a better bowler than people in this list as well but for now I feel I would wait for his career to get over before ranking him ahead of these legends. He is truly once in a lifetime talent.
He may be better than Pollock and Walsh already.

The rest is fair.

Lindwall is still ahead of Bumrah. Holding too perhaps. Pollock/Walsh arguable.

I think to be safe I would say he is just outside the top 15.

But Styen was most effective when he was operating in the mid 130s. Thats when he generated crazy movement.
Na.

Steyn was at his most effective in his mid 140s, and sometimes when he was bowling faster. He got crazy movement at that pace too, but the ball moved later, and bats were struggling with how fast it was coming on.

The one thing that was better when he was bowling slower was control. But he didn't make the decision to slow down because he thought the control was worth it. He did it because he was feeling a need to protect his body ashe got older.

What if Pollock retired after 78 Tests?

Would he have been considered a Top 10 bowler?

78 Tests. 318 wickets @ 20.83.

in Aus : Avg of 27 (6 Tests)
in Eng : Avg of 25 (8 Tests)
in SL : Avg of 22 (3 Tests)
in Pak : Avg of 22 (5 Tests)
in WI : Avg of 23 (5 Tests)
in SA : Avg of 19 (41 Tests)
in Zim : Avg of 18 (3 Tests)
in NZ : Avg of 16 (2 Tests)
in Ind : Avg of 14 (2 Tests)
Possibly, but my recollection is that Donald was always better.

But yeah, these are the reminders that we need to bear in mind before we coronate current players. We just did the same with Smith.

Steyn had the extra gear when he kicked it up. Especially for his reverse spells.

Yeah, but Sachin did it for far longer, beginning a teen and finishing in almost 40. Remove his first 3 and last 3 years and I am pretty sure his numbers will take a beautiful hike
Couldn't let that stand could you.

Viv played almost 20 years himself, how about we also take away his last 2 or 3 years as well.

That's not even bringing up the flatties of the 2000's either. And doesn't include Viv's WSC days during his peak.

This motion that you've tried to create that Sachin and Hobbs are somehow above Viv, Sobers or even Smith is hilarious.

Predictable, but hilarious.
