In the 36 or so players who play 15 would regular Indian players. Among the 21 or so or those in the reckoning remaining a performance in such a tournament holds huge undue importance.

Mongia: been in and out of the team way too many times, but he might as well keep trying
Dhawan: bright future prospect, but might be a year till he's ready
Uthappa: see Dhawan, another young opening batsman
Y.Pathan: tall leggie and attacking batsman, should push case for selection with Powar
Sriram: solid batsman but doubt he'll get into the team now, 30+ yrs of age
Sunny Singh: only 19, not too well-known, consider him in a year or two if he keeps it up
Patel: tough for him with Dhoni and Karthik in now, but people shouldnt forget about him because he still has a lot of cricket left in him and he's only now maturing into a grown man, a stage Dhoni has already been through
Santh: young seamer, doesnt pose a case for selection yet
Bose: Bengal seamer, will need to be extraordinary considering the multitude of "decent" medium-pacers
Bhandari: he's always been overlooked, so I don't know if he'll be selected now, let's see ...
Shukla: 18-yr old prospect, maybe in a year or two
Chawla: all-rounder who's produced good results thus far, only 17
Nair: anything special about this guy?

That's true, but they'll get this chance every year if they perform well domestically. Besides, if they're in form (which is necessary for them to be selected), they should be able to step it up a notch and perform when it matters most in the Challenger Series, right? I see what you're saying though ...

Very poor over by Balaji. Interestingly Pathan opened with Tendulkar but wasnt tested by Balaji who bowled 3 wides (one which went for a four). RP Singh is bowling a better line.

Okay the ball popped up from the bat of Pathan, a lollipop of a catch. Gambhir and Neeraj Patel both go for it. The ball is popping up slowly. So any of them could easily call. One of them would move away you would imagine.

Not happening!

The catch is thus dropped in the silliest mix up I have seen in cricket.

Thoughts after the first session:

Agarkar - the hero! he really made the balls fly. 54* off 42 balls
Venugopal Rao - very good composed batting for his 98
Balaji - Strayed a lot. Really pathetic bowling
RP Singh - on the spot and good bowling in patches
Tendulkar - was stroking the ball pretty well before he got the one good ball Balaji bowled to get him.

289 after 50 overs.
290 to win. Good match in prospect.

Thanks a lot for keeping this thread going. Powar has done rather well, given that he's bowled to a frontline Indian side. Agarkar's done well with the bat, but Irfan looked a better batsman, though streaky, and he's a more relevant bowler and batsman. A pity Irfan gave a few chances too many. JP was unlucky, but with the ball, the Bodybuilder from Bhopal has a lot to prove. Age shouldn't be a weakness for Parab and Sriram, but Parab is a down-market Sehwag with average fielding abilities, which is a concern. However, this series should not be treated as a launchpad for selection, but as a workout for the national team and reserve players. Let the reserve players demonstrate how well they play as a team, and the national team too gets some practice. From that angle, it's not too bad. However, the primary OD series in India should be the Deodhar Trophy, not this.

Another point- was there really any logic in giving Balaji the new ball and VR Singh a ball that's old and battered? Everyone knows that Balaji struggles with a new ball but bowls very well when it gets old and gets swing to good effect. VR Singh, for those who don't follow the domestic scene (and there are unfortunately so many), is an ultra-aggressive power player who can be explosive with a new ball, but can't do much when the ball gets old. Strange.

Nair: anything special about this guy?

He's a left-arm spinner who's scored heavily for Kerala last season, but someone similar (Rajesh Pawar), got good figures against the better teams in the scene.

Why can't JP Yadav bowl with a new ball? He's a swing bowler and a tricky one at that, but he's got a ball that's doing almost nothing! His success for Railways and Central has come as a new-ball bowler, so they should try that out.

Consider this— Laxman is a world-class batsman, but is no automatic choice in ODI's because he lacks the fielding, running and six-hitting required. Yuvraj Singh has it all, but doesn't have the big-innings temperament that Laxman has and doesn't last very long. If the Indian team should be a force to reckon with in ODI's, both have to correct their weaknesses and perform.

The India Seniors bowlers are choking up things a little, and earned a run-out– that of Laxman. Let's just hope they get a few more wickets now. India-A have the hard-hitting Ramesh Powar coming afterwards, so if Badani and Niraj build a big partnership, he's got a good chance. Of course, there's Dinesh Karthik, but he's another grafter and may be a target, given his weaknesses in OD's.

On another board, they were asking why Murali Karhik was introduced so late in the innings. I must ask. Why is Murali Karthik still considered for ODI's? He's struggled in this form of the game, while his batting and fielding are not up to the mark- there are a few spinners who can bat, and surely, they should get a shot ahead of him.

Arjun, the brilliant Bowler Zaheer Khan gave away 12 runs in 4 balls to a newcomwe RP Singh. India seniors lost to India A. I think India 'A' should be the real Indian team.

OH and btw Can we compare Dhini & Karthic now ? Who faced better bowlers and who had came out better ?
