Gilchrist is an adequate wicketkeeper. Not great.

Jones is a substandard wicketkeeper I'm afraid. As much as I like him, he's not up to it at the moment. He's floored some Courtney Browne sitters in this series.

Whatever it takes!!!
I think England should give Read a go in Pakistan. Then assess both keepers on the basis of their performances and then make a long term judgement.

I think it's high time England search for a long-term keeper. Look at Australia, they hae had just 2 keepers in the past 8 years. Every country has a long-term keeper, and sadly England have failed to find one since Alec Stewart's retirement.

Why did England drop Read in the first place? He played some matchwinning ODI knocks in the windies before getting dropped.

Because of his test average of under 16.

Really, I think Read should be playing ODIs, and Jones tests. But the English selectors dont seem to want to mix and match their keepers.

Interesting discussion between Botham and Willis on subject of replacement for Jones.

Botham suggested that Read is a "must."

Willis: "I think Read is injured (apparently has a hand injury) but in any event Duncan Fletcher likes his keepers to be able to handle a bat."

Botham: "Firstly, hows he feel about them being able to catch and secondly, why is it his decision anyway? He's just the coach."

Anyway, they agreed that Jones had to go and should be replaced by Read. If he's not fit, they advocated either Foster or Batty as Prior is not a good enough keeper (he must be shocking to be worse than Jones).

Would've thought that Batty would be a bit too old to be seriously considered, he is very good though. What happened to Wallace from Glamorgan, thought he was pretty highly rated a while back?

fletcher wanted a keeper who could bat, reads batting was a major dissapointment throughout two entire tours, first of sri lanka and then of the west indies, whilst jones's batting is not great, it has been no where near that bad, fletcher wants a keeper who can bat, and at the moment there is nobody in the country who can bat as well as jones and keep.

i think that is probably what is going to happen.

Fletcher seems too have total confidence in Jones which apart from the Thorpe issue is the only area i can find fault with him. Rodney Marsh clearly thought Read was the man for the job and i agree with him completly but i think Jones will bee stuck with for a while yet

Do you still have an issue regarding Thorpe with the way that Bell has played and fielded this game?

Prior has a higher FC average than Jones.
anthony mgcrath has a better test match bowling and batting average than andrew flintoff and all the rest of the england bowlers so why not pick him as well?

well like him or not, jones took a great catch today, and perhaps showed many of his critics that he is indeed capable of taking very difficult chances.

Yeah great catch from jones and i was very pleased for him. does it change my long term opinion on him? no. Just like his supporters didnt think he should be dropped after those 2 hidious mistkaes i dont think that one great catch proves him as a good enough but still great credit too him

I don't think anyone doubted the possibilty of that.

Just a shame he drops the sitters.
