i'd back him, as atm England is already undermanned in the batting dept with Freddie batting a spot too high, (despite his whirlwind 68) and if the ready-made replacements in Prior and Read cannot chip in and contribute with the bat, which jones usually does, then i see no need in replacing jones. Obviously Read is the more dependable keeper, but relatively speakin jones's extra batting ability is more vital than Read's keeping ability

Geraint Jones is England's version of Rahul Dravid- a batsman picked to keep wickets. That can be noticed from how many byes he's given away behind the stumps. It's not just the extra catches dropped or stumpings missed. His feet are rooted to the ground and he moves very little. Compare this with Read's acrobatic movements and rapid reflexes and you would know who would be a bowler's choice behind the stumps. Read's batting may not be up to the mark, but Ashley Giles is a very good batsman at his position and if he converts his starts into bigger scores (he has a good batting record in FC/ListA), they won't need a so-called wicketkeeper-batsman. Jones is no doubt a good batsman, maybe good enough to play as a specialist in the England side, but he's the wrong choice for that very vital job behind the stumps.

So was Alec Stewart - and in the end he became a very fine wicketkeeper indeed. Jones MIGHT - then again, he might not.

While Jones made a couple of good catches today i thought he looked far frome convincing. I would have got rid of him a while ago but if he fails in the second inings then maybe the England seclectors will have had enough

He let too many low ones from Giles through. The main problem being he was trying to predict the bounce of the ball and not actually rising with the delivery.

In fairness (unusual for me), the shooter and a Warney-like ripper out of the rough would have been too much for anyone short of Bob Taylor class. The other lot of 4 byes was off Simon Jones, and was a huge leg-side swinger which he did well to lay a finger on.

well for a keeper who merits a place for his batting, averaging 30 is not good enough for someone who is no more than an average wicket keeper. he missed what might have been a difficult stumping chance during a game too, and if he doesnt start coming good with the bat soon, theres no way he should still be in the side.

And he actually only just averages over 28.

Read has improved his battting in the last couple of years if you look at his averages for the last couple of years there is a bit improvment. I would definetly go for read for the next test

I'm concerned that Read would struggle to average anything in excess of Giles in Tests - in terms of his being one of those players whose batting style doesn't transfer to Tests. Was it short balls that did him over repeatedly in the WI?

Either way, I trust Fletcher to get it right and whoever takes the gloves at Trent Bridge gets my 100% support.
