I see that the Riverside is to be named the Banks Homes Riverside Stadium in a new sponsorship deal.

The club posted this yesterday so it's not an April Fools joke.

The latest 'The Analyst Inside Cricket' Podcast titled 'Red Ball Priorities' is a 50 minute discussion between Simons Hughes and Mann and CEO Tim Bostock.

Interesting listen but I suggest blood pressure tablets should be taken before listening especially when talk turns to the Hotel.
Finally got round to listening to this, so wanted to revisit it with a bit of a deep dive on my thoughts on the whole affair.

I’m actually much more positive having listened to it. Now obviously the Saudi connection is vile, as would be any potential connection to the mags, but I do think that Bostock is coming at it from a good perspective (for us) of wanting to do these things as a way of future proofing Durham CCC. AND on top of this, as a way of allowing DCCC to be ran independently of all of those side quests - especially with regards to Durham’s women’s football team where there’s simply no way there could be any real direct correlation with the two in terms of sporting endeavour because the two simply are not directly comparable - because, overall, the way he describes those potential partnerships, especially as with regards to the hotel, is in such a way that suggests that DCCC will ‘own’ the rights to any money coming from purchase/lease of land or of any ongoing profit that comes from their existence at the allowance of DCCC. Now I’m fairly sure him and his colleagues will make a pretty penny from any deal, but I’m coming round a little bit to the idea that aslong as DCCC are getting a cut from it too, it’s perhaps not the worst idea in the world.

I’m fully aware that people will disagree with this and I welcome debate on it, for clarity and to double down, the idea of any connection with PIF still makes me physically sick. The idea also that it will morph into some sort of bastardised John Hall (c**t) version of DisneyWorld or perhaps more fitting would be Neverland (yes, I do mean the highly questionable, definitely a little bit noncey Michael Jackson version) also makes me want to vomit uncontrollably into my own lap - however I cling onto the belief that UK sport and its fans (mag muppets excluded - just look at any Sam Fender ‘homecoming’) are far too tribal to be conned into throwing their support behind something like that.

On the inevitable talk and connection with the 16.4, I’m even more optimistic now (on a wider scale) about that. Again, this is something I fully accept I could be a million percent wrong on, but the sale of the franchises, to my mind , represents the best chance we’ve had since the dark day it was created that FTECB can wash their hands of it and admit their ****up*. We (and by ‘we’ I mean the county game) are closer now to a full clean break of it than we have been to this point. At the very least I believe this will begin to put a lot more distance between county and franchise and that’s the thing that I believe has the best chance of ‘saving’ the counties.

On County Cricket - his views on the One Day Cup and Blast are pretty much exactly the same as mine, which I think is a big reason for me coming out of it with more optimism on the whole. When he made his comments about county members at the start of last year his stock was very very low, I had the genuine fear that he’d prove to be nothing more than a snake oil salesman. Granted many people may still think that, especially if he’s wanting to get into bed with PIF, but from a cricketing standpoint I think that while he says things and has ideas such as this, which would definitely improve the county game as a whole - I begin to feel more confident that he does have DCCC’s best interests at heart. I think we would all agree that DCCC needs to make money to survive, I know we’ll all agree that we all probably have different ideas to him on how to achieve that or atleast how we’d like it to be achieved, BUT on a basic level I do feel like change is inevitable and that if we can embrace it, but in such a way that the pain is only minor, we may be able to move on and retain what is dear to us. With Bostock sharing my view on the white ball game it is atleast one little victory in achieving what we want.

His idea on the Championship however was ridiculous, quite frankly, but I don’t at this point feel to concerned about that because reading between the lines from what he said when pushed by Hughes on how likely it is to happen I think he’s in the minority on the panel he sits on. I don’t get the fascination from sports administrators in the UK around ‘playoffs’. I’ve said before that I’m someone who watches A LOT of sport and in the US the idea of playoffs is huge and it genuinely does work, but we’re different here and I just don’t think it’s something that cricket wants, needs or would benefit from. The vagaries of the English cricket season simply does not lend itself to the idea that the best part of 6 months of cricket - with the variations in weather and playing conditions and of player availability - would be best served by having a one-off game in September decide the outcome of who is the ‘best’ county.

Thanks if you’ve read this far ;), I look forward to the debate that follows!

*they may wash their hands of it, but I appreciate there’s ZERO chance they admit they ****ed up.

Excellent appraisal.I did attempt to elaborate but my response was blocked by administrators when I couldn't understand where there was any contentious or remotely offensive content.

I'm actually in favour of 3 divisions of 6 with promotion and relegation playoffs.
Never been a fan of this.

It would mean less CC games and I feel we don't play enough now as it is.

In other news it looks like Pools takeover is all but complete. Looks like the new owner will be Ben Dillon who comes from....Barnet!!!

That wasn’t quite what he proposed though, he wanted two 6 team ‘conferences’ that were essentially on the same level. With a third ‘conference’ essentially being the bottom feeders.

The big problem I have with that is that it would increase the likelihood of the ‘have nots’ being cast further adrift of the rest and I could see a world where it makes an argument for the removal of some of the more unfashionable counties.

He didn’t totally think it through either, he claimed everyone would have 12 games (a further reduction of two games) but those in the bottom conference would only play 10.

Agree but most based on regional fixtures than promotion/relegation. Group winners plus best rubber up contest SF etc.
Playing the same ‘regional’ 5 teams every year would be crap mate. It would also totally remove the chance of playing at some of the nicest grounds on the circuit.

Absolutely this. The naysayers love to say we play far too much cricket and suggest a reduction of the number of county games we play - but there are far easier ways to reduce the amount of cricket which would make much more sense. Ditching the 16.4 would be a start, as would reducing the Blast to 10 games from 14, which interestingly Bostock was in favour of AND it’s good to know that what happened in Australia when they did this was EXACTLY what I suggested would happen - they had 20% fewer games but a 20% INCREASE in aggregate attendances. That’s aggregate, not average.

Lads, this is more or less the preview of the season I posted on the domestic cricket thread. For those who don’t like to venture to far from our own calm waters 😉

I’ve absorbed practically every piece of writing and every podcast that’s been put out on the start of the county season - unsurprisingly the BBC are the only ones who haven’t yet sorted theirs, which is a massive slap in the face to the excellent Kevin Howells, they consistently let him down and frankly, they don’t deserve him.

Anyway, I’m a Durham supporter, it seems the biggest question is ‘CAN SURREY BE STOPPED’ and if so, by whom?! I’d love to say by us, a few people have been kind enough to tip us, but I have to say that the bowling depth concerns me. Last year we had the lowest number of bowling bonus points in the Division, the problem we have isn’t talent (or a lack thereof), it’s dealing with international call ups and injuries. In a perfect world (which, of course, we don’t live in) we could field a four man pace attack of Test players - Wood, Potts, Carse and Stokes. Unfortunately for us, the concern will be that we won’t see much of any of them. As far as I’m aware only Potts will be available for the first half of the season, we may see Stokes playing later in April or May, but I suspect it’ll be a a batsman only. Ben Raine continues to perform admirably in filling the role left by Chris Rushworth, I look forward to seeing how Doggett (sp?) performs when he arrives for the Warwickshire game next week, but aside from that there’s a lot of youth and inexperience. Players like Minto, Hogg, McAlindon and Killeen all have bags of promise and potential, Minto and Hogg have also received praise nationally from the media, but it would be unwise to place too much expectation on them as they learn their trade. I expect the occasional seam of Will Rhodes will be heavily relied upon, as will the spin of Parkinson and possibly even Ackermann in terms of finding people to give the quicks a rest in the middle of the afternoon. A pacer that does have experience and capability is Paul Coughlin, but he continues to be MIA too regularly for him to be considered a serious contender for making a telling contribution - which is a shame, because I genuinely believe that when fit he’s as good a genuine all-rounder as any in county cricket.

Batting wise we may have the strongest lineup in the country, the hardest task for Ryan Campbell will be putting together the best combination and then keeping happy the lads he can’t find a place for. We’re likely to see the order in the first month or so of the season with something like: Lees, McKinney, Gay, Bedingham (although not at Trent Bridge), Rhodes, Ackermann, Robinson.

Bedingham might want to go 5, Rhodes and Robinson have both batted higher than I have them, the latter especially could be interesting, he was magnificent at 5/6 in our Division Two title winning season, but struggled a bit at times last year, perhaps filling the more traditional keeper/batsman 7 slot will suit his game much more, along the Adam Gilchrist lines.

Much has already been written of McKinney’s promise, I think it’s a big year for him, my main concern is that he’ll fall into the Zak Crawley trap of looking a million dollars for the first few overs but suddenly finding a way to throw it away. The key for him will be finding the right gear and giving himself a chance.

On top of all that, we boast four bowlers (I think it’s four) who have FC hundreds to their name. Raine, Carse, Potts & Coughlin, so if the top order don’t get the job done, the lads down at the bottom might just keep us competitive.

I’m excited for the season as always, but I think this year may see us in something of a holding pattern, we’re heading in the right direction and for those of us who enjoyed the three title wins only to have to endure the possibility that we’d cease to exist - I’m hungry for more success, but patient enough that I’m simply enjoying the ride for the time being. I feel like this squad and the coaching staff have the ability to win it, but that they’re not quite there just yet. Would love to be proved wrong come September.

Hope you’ve enjoyed it if you’ve got this far. Apologies if it’s given you a headache.

Ha’way Durham!

Excellent preview. I agree 100% with your suggestion of Robinson in the No.7 Gilchrist role as he's never been quite the same since Smith got the England nod and to be fair looked scratchy even against the Uni before his careless run out.

Bowling is a concern - North had rather optimistically suggested in November that we may have actually seen Stokes and Wood in a couple of red ball games pre-June so including those two our probable list of absentees going into the first game will be Stokes, Wood,Carse, Doggett, Conners, Hogg, De Leede, Coughlin, Minto and Robinson (C).

Anyway - Onwards and Upwards!!
