Not aimed at anyone in particular, but what reasons do you guys have for some of the rankings you have involving players from totally different eras? For example, if you have Lara-Grace---Ponting, what is it that elevates Lara above Grace in your eyes that Ponting doesn't have? I can understand if someone rates Grace above all of Tendulkar and Lara and Ponting, or someone rating all 3 modern batsmen (and possibly many more) above Grace. Its the weird rainbow sandwiching I don't get. Or is it just arbitrarily mixing up the batsmen to appear representative of all eras of the game, preciseness be damned?

Simple. I love Lara and Tendulkar but can't stand Ponting, nor do I think he's anywhere near as good as the other two. WG has enough repute that I feel he should be high on that list so I'm willing to leave Ponting down the order but not the other two. Will vote for many other people I never watched bat before I vote for Ponting.

The number of people who rate Lara above Ponting must be hundreds of millions, no ?

Hmm. I'd put Lara over Ponting myself, but that doesn't mean there's much in it.
Sure. I rate Ponting very high myself (not above Lara though). I think many of us happen to dislike Ponting for non-cricketing reasons and at times it shows in our appreciation of one of the finest batsmen of his generation and on of the greatest ground fielders in the history of the game.

I wasn't questioning why people rate Lara over Ponting. I was wondering how Grace, a batsman from a totally different era, slots exactly in between them (or any other two contemporary batsmen for that matter). Surely there must be some reason (excluding the personal dislike factor) for such precise sandwiching?

Well, the nature of this voting system essentially means we have to. Personally, I would feel voting Lara, Ponting and Tendulkar all in ahead of the greatest player pre-1900 and the greatest from the 1979-94 era would be an undue modern bias.

OK, I hate the little ****

Agree with that, yeah.

Nevertheless, there'll never be a definite answer to comparisons like those so it's pretty reasonable to let your personal preferences take over at some stage. I'll tend to vote for Warne over comparable bowlers simply because he's my favourite cricketer. If i didn't I'd probably do it subconsciously anyway.
