CW Ranks the Batsmen

Dissector

International Debutant
Greg Chappell
Lara

Personally I am not even considering Grace. I think the game was too different back then for comparisons with modern players. I wouldn't consider Sid Barnes for best bowler for the same reasons. And of course I know very little about such players anyway.

I wasn't questioning why people rate Lara over Ponting. I was wondering how Grace, a batsman from a totally different era, slots exactly in between them (or any other two contemporary batsmen for that matter). Surely there must be some reason (excluding the personal dislike factor) for such precise sandwiching?
Precisely. As I mentioned in the other thread, my lack of vote for Grace is not indicative of his abilities, just my doubt in terms of how such abilities can be compared in a single framework with the players from the modern era. Certainly, compared to his contemporaries, he was up there with Bradman.

well, this is a poll where you have the right to extrapolate what little we know of players before we all were born and try to place them in any order you want. of course, it is not scientific. but even polls about modern players alone are not exactly "scientific". i vote for warne over murali, richards over chappell and sachin over ponting whereas the numbers in all these cases actually point in the other direction. my logic in voting for grace above lara, sachin and ponting (and many other modern greats except richards) is my belief - from what i've read of grace and what we know of the stats from the era - that WG would've done better than most champions in any era. this is not school work so there is nothing wrong in voting with your heart.

Yea, I completely agree. I'm fine with him being #1, and I completely understand why. I just think the game is too different to make a direct comparison like that, so I choose not to. Obviously none of this is remotely scientific.

The next few for me will be Hutton, Sutcliffe, Gavaskar, Hammond, Chappell and Lara in whichever order. IMO that's a solid top twelve.

DaRick

State Vice-Captain
1) Wally Hammond
2) Ricky Ponting

The second one is very tough. I could've picked Len Hutton, Greg Chappell, Ken Barrington, etc.
