Young shines in Webhead whitewash
Magnificent twin centuries from Peter Young helped cap off an impressive whitewash for Cricket Web 'A', with victory by 295 runs at the Jinnah Stadium. Peter Young was absolutely dominant, giving just one chance whilst scoring 296 runs in the match.
Dave Richards won the toss and decided to bat first in perfect conditions. Young then proceeded to ensure the top order would put up a decent first innings show for the first time in the series, as he was the major figure in the Webheads reaching 309/5 at stumps on day one.
Attacking half-centuries from Mike Wilson and nightwatchman Richards were essential, as a late collapse threatened to ruin the hard work of earlier. Ultimately Cricket Web 'A' was all out for 438.
They then took to the field and, whilst wickets did not tumble, the bowling was steady and persistent. Timewell and Richards took 4 wickets apiece, and the Webheads took a lead of 101 runs.
The second innings began just 16 overs before lunch on day four, and aggressive batting was the order of the day. First, Young and Lezama set the platform with a very solid opening partnership of 131, then Feeney and Young advanced the score to 217/2 when the former was caught at long leg.
Young had then just reached his second hundred of the match, off 193 balls, and was joined by Bryce Cunningham with 17.4 overs left in the day. Expected to smash the ball about, Cunningham kept the scoreboard moving rather than slogged the bowling, as Young took charge on his way past 150 for the declaration.
At 321/2 declared, it represented a revelation of top order batting of the highest quality. The declaration came overnight, and the hosts were left 90 overs to stand in the shadow of a total of 423.
Timewell took the early wickets, then Richards got in with his left-arm offbreaks, as the two were hugely instrumental once more with the ball. Bryce Cunningham then returend to the attack and finished off with the final two wickets to seal the crushing win.
58.3 Cunningham bowls to Riaz Afridi...
He's gone for the pull shot and it's gone straight up in the air!! Surely that's it! Cunningham calls for it. He settles under it. TAKEN! Whitewash complete! A major moment in Cricket Web history.
Peter Young was named the Man of the Match by a landslide.
