And so to the big one, the previous matches merely foreplay, only sideshows leading up to the main event - the first test in the series. No more swimming with sharks or picking up locals in the clubs. The serious stuff starts now.

The team was unchanged from the success in the previous warmup but the overhead conditions were heavily clouded and South Africa won the important toss and but England in.

Kemp struck early on to remove Vimes for 7 with the score 17. Bennett and Nichani ground out 43 runs before Kallis sneaked one through Nichani's defences. Cloete came out to smash them to all parts but only succeeded in missing a straight one from Kent and having his middle stick laid flat. Bell soon followed him back in to the pavillion lbw for 5 and England were 102-4 at lunch. It didnt get much better after lunch, Bluefox caught behind for 14 and then Scott Craze forced to retire hurt after a beamer from Hayward hit him on the helmet. Throughout this Bennett was playing a lone hand from the top of the order and reached a well deserved half century, unfortunately he was unable to rescue the situation for England and when he went for 71, the tail folded to be all out for 192.

The England bowlers were then in great form, only to be thwarted by that thorn in many team's sides, Gary Kirsten. The veteran opener carried his bat throughout the South African first innings, making 134 not out to mar a good bowling performance. 4 wickets for Kevin Dean and three each for Smethurst and Chapman, at one stage South Africa were 158-6 but they rallied thanks to mr Kirsten to 309 all out. A lead of 117.

England needed something inspirational and they found it in number 3 Nichani. After Bennett's early dismissal it was Nichani who held the innings together. No other batsman reached 40 but Nichani forged partnerships of 70 with Cloete, 86 with Bell, 77 with Bluefox, and 52 with Chapman before perishing at the last for a brilliant 158. The abscence of Craze through injury could prove deciseive, England all out 364, 248 to win.

Smethurst removed Smith with the score on 33 but a century partnership between that man Kirsten and Kallis, who made 80 seemed to have killed off any hopes of an england victory. However from 142-1 South Africa were reduced to 196-6 with a brilliant 5 wicket hall from Matthew Hoggard. The victory seemed a possibility but and unbroken 7th wicket stand between Boucher and Mckenzie saw SA home to take the lead in the series with a 4 wicket win

South Africa v England
2nd Test Match - 10 Dec 2003
**********************************************

Not really a match England could afford to lose, they named an unchanged side after the recovery of Craze and hoped the boys could turn it round. The pitch looked lovely and SA had no hesitation in batting first. Dean struck twice early on to leave them 13-2 bowling both Smith and Kirsten. Steady progress was made throughout the morning with 2 further wickets forthcoming, one each for Dean and Smethurst. England on top at lunch. The fifth wicket fell soon after lunch with Chapman removing the dangerous Kallis. Kent and Kemp then steadied the ship but the loss of Kent and Boucher before and after tea left SA 222-7 and somewhat in trouble. However that was to be the last SA wicket to fall in the first innings as Kemp(235*) and Pollock(199*) put on an insane 387 unbeaten partnership for the eigth wicket. South Africa declared on 609-7 and England were in deep trouble.

The reply started steadily with a 50 stand by Bennett and Vimes, Bennett clearly not in a hurry whilst Vimes took the attack to SA. However two wickets fell in quick succession, with Vimes going for 43 from 67 balls (with the score 51) and Nichani following for a duck. Bennett and Cloete put on another 50 stand before Bennett's long vigil ended, his 'Athertonesque' innings lasting 129 balls for just 27 runs. When Cloete fell 9 runs later for 38 the game looked up. However England had a sensational partnership of their own to wow the home crowd. Ian Bell and Bluefox put on 326 together to bring the English back in to it. Bell made 138 but Bluefox was the star of the show with 224. The lower order helped England to 576 all out and with little time left, the odds were on a draw.

South Africa v England
3rd Test Match - 26 Dec 2003
**********************************************

So one down with 3 to play, England desperately wanted something out of this game in Durban. They were lifted by the news that Malone was back from injury and he replaced Smethurst. Chapman also made way for the King of Spain, Ashley Giles. Once again England lost the toss and were asked to bowl first on a good pitch. Hoggard removed Kirsten and Kallis to keep it even before lunch but England looked on top when Giles removed Smith and Kent, Hoggard got Mckenzie and Dean had Gibbs pouched by Nichani. SA were reeling on 149-6. Yet again the lower order got them off the hook. Kemp and Boucher added 164 for the seventh wicket and then Pollock came in and made another half century to put SA all out for 419.

Faced with another daunting total to face England lost both openers cheaply and found themselved 12-2. Nichani and Cloete then put on 190 for the third wicket to put them back in to the game. Nichani fell one short of a century and they soon lost 3 wickets for 17, 219-5. Then Scott Craze joined the inform Bluefox and they dispelled any thoughts of a defecit with a stand of 209, Bluefox going to a second century in successive innings. Malone and Giles both contributed usefull runs as England put on 539 to give a healthy lead.

South Africa's openers looked to have ensured a draw in the game with a 146 run opening partnership but a terrific blitz by Matthew Hoggard had them reeling at 266-7, only 146 ahead with almost a day left. The lower order curse struck again though as Boucher and Pollock put on 65 to get SA safe and leave England a tricky session with no hope of victory.

South Africa v England
4th Test Match - 2 Jan 2004
**********************************************

To keep alive hopes of winning the series, England had to win this match. Adnerson replaced Dean but this was the only changed, so much appeared to rest on the toss and the omens looked good when england won and chose to bat. Bennett and Vimes ensured a confident opening without dominating and when Vimes went for 21, Nichani joined Bennett in a century partnership that took them until just before tea. A setback ensued as both departed either side of tea but Cloete and Bell led a recovery with a partnership of 77. Cloete went on to make the innings top score of 77. The run rate was slow but England were grinding out a solid score. Scott Craze added 57 and Giles 39 as everyone in the side got to double figures. All out for 464.

At last the England bowlers had some runs to play with and Hoggard was eager to exploit them. He removed both the openers then Giles got rid of Gibbs, 56-3. Mckenzie and Kallis repaired but at 137-4 England were on top. Once again though the bowlers ran up against the brick wall of South Africa's lower order. Kent, Kemp and Boucher this time the culprits adding 79 for the sixth and 90 for the seventh wickets and 53 for the ninth was further insult to injury, once again a good position had slipped away. If England were to have a chance of victory they needed quick runs, however with nearly 150 overs left they didnt want to lose it by going out rashly and leaving the SA time to win. Indeed Vimes was a bit more circumspect than usual and Bennett was the senior partner in their century parntership. Nichani tried to raise the pace and payed the price but Cloete came in and he and Bennett scored briskly to set up a fascinating last day. Unfortunately, just after reaching a fine debut century, Bennett was struck on the thumb and forced to retire, out of the final test aswell just as he was starting to look comfortable at test level. This brought in Bell and he and Cloete went on the attack a fantastic partnership saw Bell hit 45 from 35 balls whilst Cloete hit 76 from 97 though hit last 44 came from 37 balls. England declared before lunch to leave SA out of the game.

With one over before lunch England got the best start possible with Kirsten edging behind to Vimes with no score on the board. Anderson got another after lunch in Smith and when Hoggard got Gibbs caught and bowled SA were 12-3 and in trouble. The wiff of victory was in the air but with their eyes firmly on the prize, the England players were to be denied yet again. the fourth wicket pair added 70 and the 5th 51 but with 3 quick wickets the situation was tense again. Boucher and Pollock held firm, despite several LBW appeals which looked stone dead and a catch behind which wasn't given despite deviating at least a foot. Buggsy Malone and Cloete were later fined 50% of their match fee for indisgressions. Sledging might be commonplace but comments to the umpires such as 'How much was it this time Aleem' and 'You should have gone to specsavers' are never tolerated and the pair were lucky to escape a ban. One person who didn't escape a ban though was Shaun Bennett, who on the conclusion of the draw, in an episode remeniscent of David Beckham, was caught on CCTV entering the umpire's changing room and throwing black paint over all the officials clothes before daubing 'cheats' on the walls. The resulting one match ban ruled him out of the final test, but he was already injured anyway.
