And so to the final match in the series. Win or leave empty handed, one change in the side, the enforced replacement of the injured/banned Bennett. In come Michael Powell(Glamorgan) for his debut. England win the vital toss and again choose to bat.

The debutant is an early loss missing a straight one from Kemp, 21-1. Nichani plays fluently with Vimes but after a partnership of 73, he is out just before the lunch interval, 98-2 at lunch. In the afternoon they lose 3 further wickets, Vimes for 78 after a partnership of 58 with Cloete(39), Bell the other man to go. 192-5 at tea. The evening session is one of solid batting by Bluefox and Craze as they seek to ensure a good total, they take England to 277-5 at close of play.

The next day dawns cloudy and with a fair amount of rain 2hrs and 33mmins are lost. Nevertheless there is time for Bluefox to score another vital ton and Craze to score a 50. The SA become the ones to feel the power of the lower order as over the afternoon of the second day and the morning of the third, Malone scores his debut test century and is ably supported by Giles as England post 545-8. Half the test match is gone though so a win might be tricky.

Ricaldo Anderson gets England off to a good start with the wicket of Smith, Kirsten is his usual obstinate self before Cloete sneaks one through his defences. Gibbs and Mckenzie then hold up the England bowlers without really getting in Cloete removes Gibbs and then Hoggard bowls an important spell which starts with the removal of Mckenzie on the evening of day 3 then comes back in the morning to remove Kent and Kemp, the two who have caused a lot of problems this series. 166-6.

The there was the other terrible 2, Boucher and Pollock, they provided the impressive Kallis with support for a while Boucher removed by Giles before an amazing spell of bowling from Malone, with the 4th ball of the 93rd over Malone bowled Pollock, with the 5th he had Adams caught behind and with the last he had Shultz plumb infront. A Hat-trick for the CW and England Star

Now for the follow on, once again England could sniff victory, this time they did not want to be denied.

Kirsten went bowled Anderson. 4-1. Smith and Kallis held England up with a half century partnership but Malone broke it by catching Kallis Leg Before, Smith followed edging Giles to Vimes behind the sticks.

From then on it was the Andrew Cloete show. The leg spinner put in his best ever spell, mesmerising the SA batsman with a variety and accuracy not seen since, well never. Gibbs was first to go, soon followed by Kent and Mckenzie, acrobatically caught and bowled. Boucher lasted no time and then Kemp was brilliantly stumped by keeper Vimes. Cloete then bowled Pollock and Adams neck and crop to finish with astonishing figures of 20.4-9-25-7 and secure the match for England.

It was still not enough to secure the MOM though as a century and a hat trick earned Malone the honours, the Test series shared 1-1.

WOW! Great test match CW, England! Some brilliant performances!!!! Personally I'm delighted with that effort, my bowling hadn't really been effective in tests, up till that match! Fantastic win!

Epic stuff. :D Personally very pleased with first (or second, unsure) test fifty, but would like to get dropped soon, because I really am not churning out consistent performances...

Bloody CCTV! grrr...

South Africa v England
1st One Day International - 22 Jan 2004

The ODI series started with SA looking to get retribution for their heavy defeat in the last test. England were still without Bennett through injury but Wood replaced Powell at the top of the order. Chapman came in for Giles and Dean returned for Anderson.

We won the toss and chose to bat, it didnt look good as Wood fell to the first ball of the match and Nichani was dropped from the second, but Vimes and Nichani then stabalised with a partnership of 62 before 3 quick wickets fell to leave England 95-4. But good knocks from Bell, Bluefox, Craze and Malone helped England to 246 all out in the 49th over.

SA began there reply cautiously but without any losses as their openers put on 83. They began to open up when Chapman came on and the spinner took some punishment. it was his and Cloete's wickets however that put England in with a chance at 159-5 with 88 still needed. That was the best it got though as Gibbs and Kemp cruised to victory with 13 balls to spare, Chapman finsihed with 3-73 and Cloete 2-55. Not a good start to the series for England. The failure of the fast bowlers to make an impact and of any batsman to hit 50 was what let us down, the cheerleading of Bennett from the stands also seemed to have an adverse affect.

In the second ODI England were put into bat by the South Africans, the team was little changed, Anderson came back for Dean that was all. having to bat first wasnt a great situation and id didnt look it as Vimes went early after a wild slog. Regular wickets fell throughout the innings and only 4 players got to double figures. Wood top scored with 47 and Bluefox scored 38. We were all out for 164 and didn't hold out much hope.

Morale in the camp is down and we are in serious need of some good news. With this in mind the team headed of to a strip joint to have some fun. Lax security enabled the younger team members to get in in the interests of team bonding. The Super Soaker girls were very popular.

Under the cosh after 2 losses and facing criticism from the papers at home, england needed a good start to this match. They didnt get it. After losing the toss again and having to bowl, South Africa put on 185 for the first wicket, that man Kirsten scoring another century and Smith hittin 96. A late flourish enable South Africa to score 286 and set a tough total.

The reply was one that would go down as one of the greatest chases in ODI history. After a steady start, three quick wickets fell to leave England 65-3 and in trouble. They were rescued by a partnership of 87 from Cloete and Bell but when Bell fell it was all down to Cloete. Receiving little support from any of the lower order the CW batsman netherless set about destroying the SA bowlers and charging towards the total required. Wickets continued to fall at the other end and when the 8th wicket fell at 241, 46 were still needed at over 7 an over and only 2 wickets left. However one of those was Cloete and having passed his century before he continued to crush the bowlers. He hit a four of the first ball of the last over to complete the victory and finished with a fantastic 146*

Last 3 ODI's didnt go to well....

4th ODI
England 185 ( Craze 39, Nel 3-38) Lost to SA 186-4(Kirsten 57) by six wickets

Won the toss, but never got going, Wood again out in the first over. Nichani and Cloete both got starts but didnt go on. Malone and Cloete the pick of the bowlers, both took 1-36 from 10.

5th Odi
SA 302-5(Smith 99, Gibbs 55, Kallis 53) Beat England 275all out (Craze 62) by 27 runs.

Always under the cosh after a poor bowling display, the spinners got really tanked as did the fast bowlers at the end, (well everyone really). Recovered well from 105-5 with the lower order contributing well but couldnt keep wickets in hand.

6th ODI
SA 261-8(Kallis 73, Anderson 3-40) beat England 260 all out( Cloete 94, Pollock 4-53) by 2 wickets

Series ends in dissapointing manner, Bennett returns and we make a credible 280 with another good innings from Cloete but its no enough as the bowlers cant quite do it and we lose the series 5-1.

3 tests in NZ and 5 ODI's by the end of the week then the new season starts next week hopefully.

Kiwi Warm-Up Matches

England 482 (Bennett 182, Bluefox 55, Cloete 51, Hefford 5-134) & 225-1 declared ( Cloete 102*, Bennett 88*) beat Central Districts 344 (Kelly 162, Sinclair 70, Hoggard 4-43, Chapman 3-66) & 139 (Kelly 66, Chapman 7-46) by 224 runs.
MOM Bennett

First warm up match couldn't have gone better, all the top 6 bar Ian Bell got substantial time at the crease in the first innings, Bennett was sensational. Then Hoggard bowled well after a good opening stand for CD. Cloete then scored a superd ton including 4 sixes in the second innnings with support from Bennett to set up the target and Chapman showed some form to skittle 7 and take 10 for the match.

England 414 (Bennett 134, Peitersen 78, Malone 59, Franklin 5-140) & 226-4 ( Cloete 59) beat Wellington 316 (Wells 66, Penn 58, Bell 57, Smethurst 4-75) & 323 ( Bell 86, Chapman 4-89) by 6 wickets.
MOM Bennett

A tougher test but again a good win. Bennett agains sensational and good spells from Smethurst in the first innings and Chapman in the second. The chase was quite tight in time terms but everyone chipped in and Cloete's 59 came from 51 balls. Good form going in to the test series
