Yes it is hard to strike a balance between hard but not SJS format.

Which player said after a nightmare Test debut 'Don't worry I have a little lad at home, who will make amends to the name of XXXX' ? (name his son)

a clue: During the same series a famous quote was made 'Don't worry Wilfred we will get em in singles'

Fred Tate who, on his debut at Old Trafford in the 4th test in 1902, got 0 for 44 and 2 for 7 (not a nightmare in itself) but famously dropped Joe Darling who went on to score 48 in a very low scoring match and to top it all, was the last man with England needing three to win and was bowled by Saunders. It was his only test match. Still known as Fred tate's match !!

He had a son Maurice who went on to become what many consider the second greatest medium pacer in the history of the game after Barnes.

By the way the one who said, "We'll do it in singles Wilfred" was George Hirst to Wilfred Rhodes in the 5th test of the same series.

England needing 263 to win (seemingly impossible since the previous two innings in the same test were England 183 - 1st Inns and Australia 121 - 2nd Inns) were 48 for 5 having lost the entire top order with none of them reaching double figures. Then Jessop played that legendary knock of 102 and more importantly (with Jackson and then Hirst) took the score to 187 when he fell, the 7th England wicket to fall.

Hirst put on a painstaking 27 and 34 for the next two wickets with numbers 9 and 10 before Rhodes joined him with England still 15 short.

It was the first ever win by one wicket in tests and considered the greatest test of all times till Aus vs Windies 1961 happened.
