 Thats not the point. Point is style doesn't always equate to runs and quality. And you are trying to point to the quality of Ashwin as a batsman. Some first class batsmen look really classical and lovely. However they can't make loads of test runs, for instance.
You didn't read the first word of my post that you quoted, lol.

And Ashwin doesn't need to make 'loads' of test runs to be better than largely mediocre batsmen with a few notable innings like Kapil and Botham, no.

Mind is made up. If Ashwin can sustain batting like Vettori, he would be at the same level. Else below Vettori despite having similar skills.

Ashwin pretty much has zero notable innings so far. All he's done so far is bash a terrible WI team and get some largely inconsequential runs vs England /Australia. Atm, he's so far behind Kapil and Botham it's not even funny.

heh.

all of ashwins centuries have come against the west indies.

stokes has hit the following....
- at perth versus johnson and harris
- under grey skies at lords v southee and boult
- and that insane 258 smashathon in south africa
And he also has an unbeaten 91* against England when Anderson was bowling well with Swann and Monty for suppport, and twin fifties in the same test in Sydney against Australia. Its not like those four hundreds are the only things he's accomplished with the bat.

For a long time, he had a stupid test captain who wouldn't let him bat at his rightful place (no. 6). It's not easy to play notable innings from no. 8 or 9.

Also, you can't completely discount centuries against WI - they have some decent bowlers and those runs were very important for India in most cases

And at least 2 of those 4 100s came when the side was in trouble. I can understand if people think Stokes is a better batsman than Ashwin (so do I) but there is some serious overcompensatory under rating of his actual test batting performances here.

I would argue that he has only recently improved upon his batting and his lower batting position was apt.

completely disagree...Jadeja, Saha never did anything in test cricket to warrant a higher batting spot than Ashwin

I think this is a really unfair comparison and thread to be honest. Stokes gets massive advantage on account being part of a team with a weak top order which allows him to bat at 5 or 6 and get enough time to blast double centuries. Ashwin bats at 6 or 7 for the best, most dominant, powerful, aggressive, fearless batting line up of our times, which allows him very little opportunity to bat for long periods and score truck load of runs. If Ashwin played for England, he would bat at 4 after Joe Root.

I think threads like these need to consider these factors before putting up an official comparison like that.
