Battle of the Test captains

Its such a close call, how much should extra-captaincy roles and events play in the descision? If they are to be important then it has to be Kardar, despite my love of Coney's commentary and my natural patriotic tendancies to vote for him. I'm not familiar with Kardar as a captain at all, but I know that Coney was quite adept, even though he was dealing the New Zealand side when they were arguably at their strongest ever.

Given that the captain's role is as a leader I'm going for Kader

So Hansie's match-fixing affair should have also been disregarded then?
When you make decisions that impact how batsmen perform and the outcome of games then it obviously reflects badly on your on-field captaincy.

Lets say that Hansie was not a match-fixer but instead he killed a man in the street. That should impact your evaluation of him as a person but not as a captain.

I hope Geoff Howarth is in this competition.
He was probably NZs greatest captain. Captained 30 Tests. Winning % = 37% and only lost 7 games.

He was also captain of NZ when they won a few series that really put them on the cricketing map. Captain as they beat WI, India, Sri Lanka and England in a short period of time.

Kardar for the reasons Brumby mentioned. Add to that the fact that he got Pakistan a win against every test nation at the time. Just imagine Bangladesh and Zimbabwe doing the same today.

Also, many people don't know this, but he had a major impact on Pakistan's cricket after he retired. Imran Khan has said that Pakistani cricket got involved in political BS only after he left PCB altogether.

My mistake. Only once I finalised the list did i found out that Howarth was the captain during important series wins against WI and Pak i always thought it was Coney:mellow:

Kardar easily for me, his record of 6 wins and 6 lossed is very impressive if you consider he was leading a new test nation and those 6 wins include a drawn series in England at the time when England was the major power house and also a series win against an Aus team lead by Neil Harvey.
Kardar had just 2 world class players at his disposal Fazal and Hanif and he always knew how to get the best out of them.

One has never heard of either being eulogised as a captain (must have missed it) but I would say Kardar only because it was a tough time when he led Pakistan and did a damn good job for a subcontinental team who werent known to win anything really.

Kardar

Imran Khan

Edit: For the benefit of one particular individual, let it be pointed out that Pollock's ODI Win % mentioned here is grossly incorrect (a typo probably), and that it is indeed greater than Imran Khan's, making the decision for him straightforward really.
