Battle of the Middle Orders

Their Era adjusted average is almost same.
Their career length isn't and Laxman played from 96, he played half of the 90s. If you are adjusting averages between two eras such that whole ass 4 runs are being made of, you are doing something wrong. Might as well rate Mark Taylor over Graeme Smith.

Yeah so he mostly sucked in the bowling friendly 90s and succeeded in the 2000s when he went down the order. Why should that be rewarded?

Except he ****ing opened in the 90s, something he did never even in domestic level.
Growing pains. Again we downgrade Waugh for the same reason, he couldn't bat well up the order in the few times he got before finding his place.

Except Laxman has a pretty good record at 3 and 4. He just was never an opener who was forced to open.

I don't think having the wrong batting position is a valid enough excuse to ignore someone's record especially when comparing to someone who spent more of this career ahead of him.
