Battle of the Australians

Merv the Swerve for me too, whole-hearted bloke who played with a twinkle in his eye. Although cricinfo's assignation of "fast" to his bowling is stretching it a bit.

Merv. Never forget when he did Fatting that time with the last-ball yorker.

Don't know much about the other **** tbh.

Err...what does being an Indian fan have to do with picking Bevan vs. Marsh?
Because If I am not wrong in one thread you were debating ODIs mean a lot to Indian fans and here you say ODIs do not mean much.

Garth McKenzie was a great bowler, but how can you vote against Merv? Especially when he seemed to save his best for the West Indies.

McKenzie was Australia only top fast bowler & bowler in his time & virtually carried the attack on his own for a a fair while after Lindwall, Benaud & Davidson retired in the early 60's. Hughes had good support from the likes of McDermott, Alderman, Lawson. So McKenzie for me..

Slow Love™

International Captain
Over the entire time I followed Merv and McDermott's careers (all of it), I always felt they were terribly ineffectual. When I contrast it to our attack today, I just have so much faith in their ability just to shut down a batsman or take a wicket, let alone, turn a match. This is not really to compare the attacks, but it's amazing how different things feel when you're a middling team as opposed to when you're the best in the world. Anyhow, the point is that I never really appreciated Merv's actual skill as a bowler (as opposed to his character, which you couldn't help but appreciate) until he was gone.

He was kinda fat, liked his beer, loud, hostile on the field but one of the friendliest guys off it) and a bit campy - far more the quintessential Australian than many others we'd hold up to that description.

they weren't all that bad...mcdermott in particular was a very good bowler(i rate him above everyone except mcgrath in the current world beating sides as far as pace bowling goes) and merv hughes could be very good on his day, it's just that the team around them wasn't 1/4th as good, as confident as it is now....

as far as this battle goes, merv hughes
