Battle of the Australians - Mk II

Michaelf7777777

International Debutant
Bill Woodfull - Great defensive openning batsman who once manged a strak of over a year of not being dismissed bowled at any level of cricket. Also a very thoughtful captain who was always concerned about the welfare of his players. An interesting historical note is that Woodul was Keith Millers maths teacher at secondary school.

bill brown and mcgill were good. woodful was better. this is a battle of solid pros. a rung below greatness, TBH

Woodfull - like to see him go far in this - sometimes greatness doesn't rest solely with your ability as a player (not that he was a slouch really either)

Haha sheesh. Never thought McGrath would almost get eliminated in the first round. Tied with Grimmett 5 all. I guess my vote would have to do it. Has to be McGrath for me.
If I hadn't been traveling it would have been curtains for McGrath in that case.

How? I suppose every member has only one vote...How could you eliminate McGrath unless you could vote against him twice?....

Woodfull ... by the way...

I could because it was tied at 5 all. My vote would have made it 6-5 and NP10 would not have cast his 'tie-breaking' vote :)

So sorry for the wait guys. 4th of July is coming up and an influx of life is making it tough for me to update this battle.

So MacGill gets overshadowed yet again, but this time by the great Woodfull.

Just to clear things up, from now on I'll only be voting in tie-breakers.

Round 1: Battle 14

Charlie Turner

Tests: 17 matches, 101 wickets @ 16.53, 11 5w, 2 10w

VS

Craig McDermott

Tests: 71 matches, 291 wickets @ 28.63, 14 5w, 2 10w
ODIs: 138 matches, 203 wickets @ 24.71, 1 5w

VS

Jack Gregory

Tests: 24 matches, 1146 runs @ 36.96, 2 100s, 7 50s ::: 85 wickets @ 31.15, 4 5w

Jack Gregory - explosive batsman and bowler, key part of a successful Australian team after WWI and judging by reports a great slips fielder, lost many of his peak years to WWI. Turner has great statistics but they don't stand out compared to other 19th century bowlers such as Lohmann and Ferris. McDermott was a top class bowler but not better with the ball than either Gregory of Turner.

Bowling wise all three candidates are reasonably even which menas that being the best batsman and the best fielder of the three Gregory gets my vote.
