Australian test selection thread 2015/16

I can't see what Lehmann's done wrong. Hardly his fault there's no real batting reserves. Seems well liked.

Was gonna post this elsewhere and it might have got talked about in the sub thread, but Athertons's interview with Clarke post toss 2 nights ago was so weird and terse. Clarke looked livid over something.

Think he was disgusted with the side he was given and annoyed they had lost the toss.

All come out in the book.

Selectors are left with the stark reality that of the Ashes squad they selected, Clarke, Fawad Ahmed, Brad Haddin, Shaun Marsh, Chris Rogers, Peter Siddle, Adam Voges, Shane Watson and the already retired Ryan Harris are all finished as Test cricketers.

It’s an enormous transition and Australia will head to the spinning wickets of Bangladesh with a rookie middle order led by Smith as captain and David Warner as a likely deputy.

Genuinely curious about what he would've been disgusted about. Was it SMarsh over MMarsh, or was it Nevill over Haddin? The only other thing it could've been was he wanted Siddle in?

I didn't think his interview was that bad. He has said the same thing on countless occasions when losing a toss. Also to be fair, he probably wanted to rush the interview so he'd have enough time to put on his gear. :)

BTW, our next Test is in Bangladesh, not against NZ.

I didn't think it was bad. But generally he's pretty upbeat when dealing with media and happy to play that game. He just looked pissed off though.

The current Australian team would still beat everyone on their home soil and most teams overseas. For some reason they couldn't be bothered, or didn't see the need, to adapt to English conditions and paid the penalty.

Or ya know, just couldn't adapt maybe... If you don't have the technique or ability you don't have it. This wasn't the first time Australia have been exposed big time during an overseas tour, they're just simply not good enough.

3 pacemen one of which can only bowl 4 or 5 over spells and the other pair had been all over the shop all series. Hard to keep control with an attack like that. He obviously didn't know they would bat like the blind team following the bell in the ball but I got the impression he wasn't happy with the side he was given.

Haven't South Africa won the last 2 test series in Australia?

I know - look at Sangakkara - was Boult's bunny and just practised so hard to score 200 against him. Technique, ability, guts & brains

Yeah I think SA are the exception, as they have played very well in Aus lately. Although to be fair the last series in 2011-12 the Australians did dominate the first 2 tests which both ended in a draw due to rain and Faf before losing the third after all 3 of their first choice quicks got injured in Adelaide trying to get Faf out (lol).

Whatever it takes!!!

You really see them beating the SC sides except Bang in the SC? I do not think they can keep eking out wins in RSA either with this many players gone if blokes like Pattinson or Cummins do not realize the potential they showed when they first burst on to the scene. They have already shown they can't be even as competitive as India were last year in English conditions. Your definition of "most" is very interesting, to say the least.

Just read a good post in another thread..

Shaun Marsh is not keeping out anyone who is absolutely belting down the door of selection.

I think that Burns, Bancroft, Khawaja, Handscomb, Lynn, Ferguson, Maddinson and Maxwell are options.

Then there are a few others like Silk, Stoinis and Head who have to make a couple of good 100s to join (and potentially surpass) the 8 names listed above.

I haven't completely ruled out Doolan, Quiney and Bailey but they all would need a Voges like Shield season to join the discussion and at present don't warrant selection. The worst thing about this post is that I feel a bit like WindiesWeathers, saying a young player needs a couple of good scores and we should pick him but it is pretty much the reality if some of the older guys do go and we look for the future.
Agree with this, but you could probably add Wade into the mix too. I know people don't particularly rate him but if you think of him purely for his batting (and that one over of medium pace!!) I don't think it is that big of a stretch to think that he is capable of batting at 6 for us. Cowan probably fits into Wade's category too which is definitely above the Doolan, Quiney, Bailey group.

Yeah, I mentioned Bancroft's name about 9 months ago and you said it then. I thought his strong season end, plus his 150 might change your opinion a bit, but no. Any particular reason why you don't rate him?
