Australian Domestic Season 2022-23

That would be especially ironic considering McDonald as Victoria coach told the Australian selectors where to go when they wanted the Vics to have Arun Finch opening in the Shield

Oz selectors definitely forced Queensland hand wrt Renshaw opening
Yeah I've heard that too, but even given that:

1. Why did Burns have to play?
2. If he really did have to play, why did he have to open when Clayton was batting 5? He didn't even start his career as an opener himself. Batting Burns at 5 was the obvious solution.

I think NSW would have batted on for 30 odd minutes this morning even if it was Gilkes and Edwards as the batters tbh

Not officially confirmed per se, but seems highly probable from all I have seen and heard

Seems like they want another veteran presence in the squad with Boland in around the Australia setup. Not sure I see the need myself, the younger generation of Vic seamers have been going pretty well this season by themselves
Ugh. Siddle has no future and the Victorian pace attack is doing perfectly fine. While I am sceptical of O'Neill's lack of pace it would be unfair for one of him, Perry or McClure to miss out for a 38 year-old. Sutherland has played 29 matches too so it's not like a bunch of total novices.

Yeah I don't get it honestly. Even if one of those guys is injured and boland is away on international's that elliot kid who played a few games at the start of the season and did ok slots in. VIC are fine for options.

Personally I agree completely on all counts, just speculating on what the logic from the Vics might be

One thing causing me grave concern is our future opening options. The figures this year don't make for pretty reading:

Ward: 30.41, no centuries
Street: 33.60, one century
Hunt: 25.94, no centuries.

Not too promising from that lot.

As for older players:

Bancroft: 58.66, four centuries - clearly the batsman of the tournament, but sceptical of whether he's actually improved anything enough for tests
Whiteman: 34.17, one century - not gonna get a go over his partner
Renshaw: 51.66, one century - looked like he'd never held a bat before in India
Harris: 41.50, two centuries - same caveat as Bancroft, but even more so

On the other hand the end of the season was good for never-wills like Edwards and Lehmann. Yuck.

Jewell had a solid season opening tbf, and whiteman still has the final to go + county cricket between now and the ashes. Given how good his long term form has been i'de expect him to get a few scores before the ashes in that period.

Moises having a little hit and giggle this morning for his own benefit cost NSW what proved some valuable time. Diabolical to go a whole season without a win

Feels like Whiteman just went into a lean run at the wrong moment. Hope he can still get some runs in the final, but unfortunately he's just had a few too many cheap dismissals the back end of this Shield season. Shame really as his body of work in the last couple of years had been very good up until that point

Still should be there abouts in the selectors thoughts should he indeed get a few scores in the Shield final/early season county games

Yeah was a strange sequence of cricket. A decleration after Hackney reached his ton and NSW would have had a decent chance at a win imo, even allowing for the pitch still being flaaaaaaaat

Yeah they will be. I saw that scoreline, good luck to him. Broken clock I suppose. Omission of Demo from the Parra side a travesty imho.

More amusing was Bert texting his disbelief at drinks yesterday that his basically second grade standard attack had run through such a strong St George line up so cheaply.

Has anyone heard anything about will Sutherland signing up for county/IPL? Can't figure out why else he hasnt been given a call up for the Aus-A tour of NZ.

100 FC wickets @ sub 25 at 23 years old while spending most of his career as a change bowler, 40 wickets @ 20 this shield season with the final still to come 400 runs @30, took 5fer last shield final and has captained his side to 5 in 5 wins to get into the final this year. He got given an AUS-A game vs India a few years back and his game this year has gone to another level compared to 2 years ago. Feels like the exact kind of player you'de want to be grooming for national honours with haze and starc on the way out.

NVM, see that he's signed for Essex. Really excited to see how he goes. Don't think he should be in the ashes squad unless neser isn't fit, but if we can get him playing cricket around the place and develop his game over the next year he could be future test player. Also means Cummins can take the new rock in tests which I reckon would just make him more lethal.

Only thing that I have heard is that he might not be quick enough to be regarded as a frontline quick (mid 130s at best)

Guys like Johnson & Morris are obviously much quicker while even Bartlett can crank it up more when healthy

Does he need to be crazy fast when we have guys like johnson and morris running around and sutherland is 6'5 and regularly takes wickets bowling first change? If he can operate in the mid 130's from his height he'll be fine.

Yeah he's about Boland pace which is obviously fine. Gets more bounce too. I get the excitement over Morris and Johnson as kind of Starc competitors, but Sutherland is definitely better than Steketee and Bartlett IMO.

Victorian. Can only have one in the Aus side at once if you want it to be successful. That being so, it's Boland or him. You decide.

Stekkeke is a bit all over the place and absolutely **** the bed when he played county for kent last year (albeit on some flat decks). He's done well for AUS-A and in the shield whenever he's played in the past 2 years but I don't really rate him too much.
