Australian Domestic Season 2022-23

Maddinson was next in line for selection 6 months ago, since then he's flopped in the Aus-A tour of sri-lanka, had an ok at best county season and stunk up the shield on batting decks where the other VIC bat's around him have managed to make runs. Doubt he's near the team right now.

After Harris and Handscomb I'm not sure who actually would be next. Maddo definitely would've made sense before this season. KPat? Wade recall?

It was an innocuous enough statement about someone who just played for Australia A IMO even if it was a slight stretch, probably didn't really need the tedious back and forth over it.

Street took 8/38 with the ball last week
Street's definitely a better bowler than most people realise but I don't think it's gonna factor into his selection when they have Neser looking so comfortable at 7.

This is all about accommodating Renshaw and probably driven by CA
Yeah that's definitely true but I think they could open together. If they want to use Burns' experience to help win matches they should bat him in the middle order - surely no-one thinks that fraud is playing for Australia again.

Interesting to see Hardie listed to bat 5 for WA

The SACA batting lineup is also interesting, but in an entirely different way

Mitch Swepson with a nice 28*. If they insist on picking him for Test matches better off playing him as a batsman. His leg spin is utterly useless

Only has to bat one spot higher for his runs to count.
Probably a little different for someone like Hardie who is going to have a decent workload with the ball imo

From memory when Green briefly batted up there he wasn't bowling at the time, could be wrong there though

Haha yeah it's different if you're not going to be picked as a specialist but for as long as Green exists and doesn't break I don't think Hardie is going to be picked as an all-rounder. You don't need six bowlers.

He's been making enough runs in tough conditions and big games to be seriously considered as a specialist middle order bat if he starts making them higher up the order.

Fair enough, honestly I have been wondering if being a middle order bat and only an occasional bowler might be his future myself, only time will tell but there are certainly signs he could have what it takes to be picked pretty much on batting alone some time in the future

Another good day for Aus cricket with Harris and Handscomb missing out once more.

Neser is having an absurd start to the shield season. If starc start's over him when we tour england in 6 months I will riot.

Yes but so what ..? I don't like long posts and I wouldn't have to if you'd just accept Maddinson is one of our best bats and can be considered next in line or there and abouts. We have a good top six but some are ageing and others like Head and Green can still be a bit flakey. So I look around the states to see who could be next in line in case form, injury, retirement or scandal causes a vacancy. Here it is: Renshaw, Street, Patterson, Harris, Handscomb, Maddinson, Ward, Jewel, Hunt, Phillipe, Wyllie and Fanning. You'll notice Street on the list - that is how much consideration I've given selectors opinions in compiling it. Which is none. That doesn't mean I don't rate selections. Just that it's my list and it casts a wider net than any team selection can. So I don't care if Maddinson hasn't made the latest cut in the PM's XI. At the start of the season he's on my radar and with justification. All that means to me is that he's fallen on my list while others, like Handscomb have risen. But he's still deservedly on it. And the way players fall in and out of form could either rise or get cut altogether.

Puc was on my list. But not anymore for reasons we all know. You'll notice others too that aren't actually anywhere near selection like Wyllie, Jewel, Fanning, Street etc. I just include them because they've got some promise - and I'm desperate. But if they had a run of form then they'd get to the front. So really my list is a mixture of hopefuls. It is in that context I've put Maddinson as closer than most. Because his record over the last few seasons counts for some insurance against his poor season so far. Anyway sorry about the length of post but there we are.
