UP FOR THE CUP? OR DOWN AND OUT WITH THE BEGGING BOWL?
(CWBC Sport Desk)
A fourth consecutive win of the new season means that Cymru Gurgitaters' fans and players alike are becalmed - For the time being at least - Although the threat of an impending financial catastrophe still hangs over Vayro's side. Perhaps significantly, as the travelling contingent celebrated taking their place in the English Cup Third Round, (chasing down Div V Stumped 89's paltry 78 for the loss of just one wicket), Chairman Vayro was snapped by an eagle-eyed paparazzi lens, sporting a drawn, pensive expression, as he drew contemplatively on his trade-mark Marlborough Light.
And well might he! Whilst the club officially continue to deny that there's any cash crisis, figures obtained for CWBC under the Freedom of Information Act would appear to tell a different story. Since The Gurs played their last league match on 11th August, accounts show an operating loss of over four hundred thousand pounds - And this despite the sales of Allrounder Thomas Mullins <Med Stam, Resp/Feeb Bat, Med/Prof Bowl> for half a million, and wicket-keeper/batsman Andy Carless <Woe Stam, Comp/Resp Bat, Comp WK> for just under two hundred thousand pounds. However, with only forty-nine thousand coming via the turnstiles in that period, and wages leaping by a staggering forty percent, to twenty-eight thousand pounds, the sums simply don't add up. Each week without gate-receipts the Club lose forty thousand pounds, before a penny has been spent on transfers or ground and academy improvements.
Yet this morning it was a typically bullish Vayro who fronted up to the press to quash the bankruptcy rumours. Whilst he confirmed that the club were currently twenty-five thousand pounds in the Red, (a figure which could rise as high as ninety thousand by Saturday with another week as bad as the last), he insisted that, with three home games in all competitions over the next two weeks, the situation was well under control.
Pointing to the record signing of Allrounder Steve Cash <Comp Stam, Resp/Resp Bat, Prof/Med Bowl> for eight hundred and thirty-two thousand, the sport and ****ography media mogul added,
"Of course I'm a Gurs' fan - The biggest going! But above everything else I'm a businessman. Look at the investment I've made, bringing Steve to the club - Is that the actions of a club and a chairman in crisis? Every day I read another headline about how Vayro's chasing the impossible dream, stretching the club beyond it's limits, all I can say is you keep thinking small, thinking safe, and you'll always have a job filling newspapers. I on the other hand have chosen to look beyond the short-term, and as a consequence I own most of those papers."
Setting out his vision for the club's future, Vayro insisted that the key lay in the planned ground-expansion, and from then on it was up to the fans.
"It's been a fact, since the day I took over, that the stadium isn't big enough to bring in the sort of revenue we're going to need in order for us to reach our full potential. Phases One and Two of the expansion plans have brought the capacity up to sixteen-thousand, and that's definitely helped. Unfortunately Phase Three had to be put back by a few months because I felt that the squad had to take priority after our promotion. We have to remember that we're in the entertainment business! I could ship the MCG over to Swansea brick by brick, but unless we're giving the fans the product they want then we're not going to fill it. I've put my money where my mouth is by bringing in Stevey cash - now let's see the rest of the fans do the same, through the gates for his home debut on Friday."
Phase three of the expansion will see the capacity rise to up to twenty-three thousand, with the addition of a second tear on the 'Hospital End', and the construction of the new 'Eddie Oli' enclosure in the Pavilion Stand.
"It's a fantastic opportunity for us to honour Eddie <Resp Stam, Comp/Woe Bat>, who as you're all aware, tragically took his own life last year, after his move to Australia went sour. Until recently Eddie was still The Gurs' record run-scorer, and nobody feels worse than me about the chain of events which led to Eddie's death."
"I'd love to have the new areas of the ground open in time for this run of home games, but it's a catch22 - We need the expansion to bring in the cash, but we need cash in order to expand! And as I say, in another couple of weeks we'll have a better idea of how the season's going, and will be able to tailor the building work accordingly."
In contrast it was an altogether chirpier skipper, Neale Patel <Sup/Woe Capt, Resp Stam, Prof/Resp Bat>, who fielded questions ahead of a possible season-defining run of fixtures.
"Yep, the first team guys involved yesterday have all come through fine, and there's no problems after training this morning, so we'll be at full strength for the trip to 4th Dimension tomorrow."
"The lads are all well up for it, it's been a long time coming, and we want to see how we'll match up. We'll be jigging things about a bit with the batting, Bennie (Jordan Bennett <Resp Stam, Prof/Feeb Bat>) and I have both been doing a lot of work in the gym over the winter, so we'll be opening, and looking for a long knock to set us on the way."
"Yeh, Bennie's not had a great run at the top of the order in OD, but it's a totally different game, he's put his hand up so give the guy a break, he's earned his chance."
"I guess nobody really knows what a good score's going to be, in that respect I suppose it would be an advantage to stick them in and have a look at where we're at after the first day, but I don't know. No-one in the BT leagues has ever played on a two or three day old pitch and we don't know how they're going to hold up, so perhaps it'll also be an advantage to have runs on the board early on. Guess it wouldn't be a bad toss to lose!"
After the three-day trip to the South Coast, Patel's team return to One-Day action on Friday, with their first home game against Season One English BT Cup winners, Berserkers. But despite the visitors' heritage, Patel plans to ring the changes.
"Geeze Guys, of course there's no disrespect intended towards Berserkers, and we certainly won't be taking anything for granted. But all the same, you have to realise it's a long time since they won the Cup, the manager's gone and the club's up for sale. It's a squad game these days, every player has a part to play if we're going to be successful, just happens that this is a game in which we feel we can change things around a bit. Look what Ivor and Iron (Trevor Wynne-Willson <Feeb Stam, Comp/Abs Bat> and Jason Creasy <Feeb Stam, Comp/Abs Bat>) achieved yesterday. Neither of them have been in the first team for a while, but with the game the way it is now, we needed them to do a job at the top of the order, and they both stuck their hands up."
"Yeh, Young David Manzini <Woe Stam, Med/Woe Bat, Med/Woe Bowl> will be going in at the deep end too. To be perfectly honest, I don't know that much about the kid - He's only 17, but hey, if you're good enough you're old enough!"
"yeh, he'll bat six, and bowl a bit too - Apparently he's pretty sharp, but we'll have to see."
"No, nothing's definitely decided - Joe Crick <Feeb Stam, Comp/Med Bowl>, Ivor and Iron will all have another run, like I say, we're going to have a look at Dave Manzini, perhaps Carlton Harrad <Woe Stam, Woe/Feeb Bat, Med WK> will give Noonie (Joe Noon <Resp Stam, Prof/Comp Bat, Resp WK>) a blow…And then we'll see who's left standing after the three-dayer I guess."
In a bizarre twist this morning The Gurs' also learned that their third round Cup tie will be at home to fellow FC League rivals, Yorkiebars. It's believed that this could be the first time that two sides from the same league have faced each other so early in the Cup competition. With Yorkiebars' posting identical ratings to The Gurs in their One-day opener on Friday, it's a tie which Vayro's men could win. Indeed, with most of the first team scheduled to take a break against Berserkers this Friday, Vayro and Patel may well opt for a full-strength side in the Cup. There's no doubt that such a move would be a gamble with fixtures mounting up, but with the prize on offer being further lucrative home ties, is it a gamble which the cash-strapped Gurs can afford to turn down?
