My game, my season, and possibly even my future all came down to one single hit by my No.11 in the 46th over!
Dragnets 199 A/O, Donaldson 75 (85), Walters 35 (53), Dennis 25 (36) - Thomas, Iron-Balls, Mullins 9/2/22/4, Shaun, The Ice Man, Bridges M, 10/1/37/3, Edworthy 6.2/1/32/2, Crick, 10/0/57/1, Bewers, 7/0/34/0.
Cymru Gurgitaters 200/9 (45.3) - Greening 24 (35), Patel 37 (56), Mullins 41 (44), Bewers 20* (52), Edworthy 14 (12), Bridges M 1* (2).
The Gurs held their nerve to close out a thrilling match in which the initiative swung constantly back and forth. Dragnets set out to show why they've been a major force in this league for the past two seasons, as openers Donaldson and Walters put on an opening stand of eighty-one after being asked to bat by Neale Patel. Both opening bowlers, Bewers and Edworthy, went wicketless in their first spells, but just as it looked as though the Gurs' skipper may come to regret his decision to field, Comp RF Crick succeeded where his more senior colleagues had failed, when he had Walters caught behind for thirty-five.
That opened the way for fifth bowler, Med/Prof Mullins to rip the guts out of the Dragnets' middle order, with a scintillating spell of three for three in four overs, from which Dragnets never really recovered. Make no mistake, Mullins was brilliant throughout the match, as was spinner Bridges M who bowled dangerman Donaldson for seventy-five in his industrious three for thirty-seven, as the visitors subsided to one-hundred-and-ninety-nine. And that wasn't the last that Dragnets were to see of this pair.
Vayro will undoubtedly have been worried over the failure of his strike bowlers to get to grips with the Dragnets top order, but no where near as concerned as he'll be tonight about his side's batting! The required rate was never a problem, failing to stray above four-an-over at any stage, but nevertheless The Gurs very nearly sleep-walked into disaster. Openers Greening and Staveley looked comfortable, until the latter inexplicably threw his wicket away for sixteen, when he went chasing a wide one. Thirty-seven for one soon became forty for two and then sixty-three for three as Noon and Greening failed to deal with the pace of Denham, and were bowled for two and twenty-four respectively, but even at that stage, they could have made it much much easier on themselves and the ten-and-a-half-thousand crowd.
Patel was seemingly playing a captain's knock in the company of the increasingly reliable Carless, as the pair added a trouble-free forty-eight at a run-a-a ball. But with his half-century in sight, Patel's eyes lit up to a flighted delivery from Rich, and he was comfortably stumped by Donaldson for 37. That started a collapse of three wickets for one run in seven balls which should have been the Gurs' undoing, but as they were with the bat, Dragnets were unable to close out their advantage, with their opponents prone at one-hundred-and-twelve for six!
Mullins, clearly buoyed by his exploits with the ball, took a few overs to settle, but was soon launching a fearsome counter attack from number seven, for which the second-string Dragnet bowlers simply had no answer. In hindsight perhaps Donaldson will rue his decision to bowl out openers Denham and Wing from the start? But equally as important as Mullins' swashbuckling forty-one was Bewers' patient twenty not out at the other end, which really did highlight his potential for future captaincy. The pair were cruising to victory with a stand of sixty-three, but Mullins eventually went for one big shot too many, to leave The Gurs seven down, still twenty-five runs short of victory. And so began to unfold this gripping match's final twist.
Edworthy's frantic fourteen provided impetus while Bewers dropped anchor at the other end, but with the winning-post just three runs away Edworthy perished...And one run later number ten Crick was following him back to the pavilion. In a tense forty-sixth, and as it transpired, final over, Bewers had sufficient confidence in The Gurs' last Batsman, Bridges M, to take a single off the second ball - And Bridges M didn't disappoint! His carve to the leg-side wasn't the prettiest shot that even he'll play in his lifetime, but it's significance can not be under-estimated. The Cymru Gurgitaters have taken a first vital step towards promotion to Division Four, and so attention can turn to the trip to Fambridge in the second round of the cup.
