I think the interest starts at school level where the main schools have a rich history and rivalries that go back to the time the British ruled here. The most famous of these is probably the Bradby Shield, which was started somewhere in the 1940s and involves the most prominent schools from Kandy and Colombo. I think there's a fair bit of interest from most of the prominent local schools here.My Sri Lankan friends have told me that rugby is very popular in Sri Lanka. 120,000 registered players or something. But yeah, that doesn't seem to have translated into international success!
