My Sri Lankan friends have told me that rugby is very popular in Sri Lanka. 120,000 registered players or something. But yeah, that doesn't seem to have translated into international success!

"Notable Sri Lankan players include Len Saverimutto, who is the father of scrum half Christian Saverimutto, who was capped three times for Ireland in the 1995–96 season."

"Sri Lanka is considered one of the rugby's success stories [citation needed], despite a modest win record on the international stage. Crowds of forty or fifty thousand have attended club games."
I think the interest starts at school level where the main schools have a rich history and rivalries that go back to the time the British ruled here. The most famous of these is probably the Bradby Shield, which was started somewhere in the 1940s and involves the most prominent schools from Kandy and Colombo. I think there's a fair bit of interest from most of the prominent local schools here.

It continues on to club level later on, but as is the case with cricket, it's in the schools that these sports are huge. I think the lack of international success is primarily due to lack of resources and possibly less exposure to better quality leagues for players. For instance, rugby is only considered a semi-professional sport here and they haven't developed provincial rugby as much as they could have due to lack of finances, corruption, and idiots in charge (much like all other sectors that governments here are responsible for). There are probably other factors like physical factors and maybe coaching, etc. that affect it.

Being good at swimming and worse at running in the triathlon is particularly uncouth. It's like being good at the strength events rather than the speed events in the heptathlon.

100% gold for Team England so far.

Nice to see some good sportsmanship between Yee and Wilde though

Didn't really understand the penalty for the Kiwi there, but hard to take anything away from Yee - what an incredible run from him, and likely would have won regardless.

The worst thing about the Commonwealth games is that amount of clean sweeps Australia get in the swimming
