    The Kumar Sangakkara Fan Club

I'm another fan of Sangakkara's. Not only does he have an enormous amount of talent, but he paces his innings expertly, and always seems to know what's called for in different situations. The one thing that bothers me is that his face seems molded out of shiny plastic. Has anybody else...

Racism - Social pariah or public consensus?

One of the things I find annoying when it comes to this issue is the whole denial aspect of it (can we somehow put this all on the Saffie expats???). It doesn't seem implausible to me that Aussies not of South-African descent might have picked up the papers and read the terms used (I certainly...

    The Art of Appealling

I think that Warne was reported a few games ago by an umpire for dissent, even if he got off. Given that some articles are saying that Broad's suggesting they "tone it down a bit", it seems like there may be something to be looked at. Regardless of whether people think the Aussies are worse...

    England team awarded MBEs

Well, these awards are pretty irrelevant these days, and a bit of a laugh. Good on 'em, they gave a lot of English kids hope and joy - spare a thought for all those poor fans now in their 20's and 30's, who lived through the horror and have the traditional lack of faith and mental scars to...

Paolo Di Canio & Fascism in football

This is quite a sweeping comment. I probably shouldn't ask, but how do you qualify it? Are you simply referring to historical treatment of indigenous population, integration of immigrants, level of actual civil unrest, general bigotry, or what? I was also under the impression that the...

    *Official* Warne vs Murali Discussion

Yeah, you raise an important question. Is the margin for error regarding in-match testing realistically less accurate than the margin of error in laboratory testing? I'd like to think that bowlers try their best to honestly replicate their in-game actions during lab-testing, although it's...

    *Official* Warne vs Murali Discussion

I think you'll find you were informed reliably in the first place, so you should pat whomever that was on the back and say "mate, you were right". Whomever's told you different has their facts wrong. Hyperextension is NOT related to the current tolerance levels, and isn't considered as an...

    Lee vs Akhtar

I'm a fan of Lee and I really hope he keeps up his improvement - he really looks to be on the way up. That 1-2 blow he delivered to Kallis the other day was utterly fantastic. Still a fair way behind The Shoaib in tests though, and it's not as if Akhtar is currently on the slide.

Ponting is the biggest choker of them all !

I reckon most of this choking stuff is bulldust, and is basically character assassination directed at players we don't like. It's a way of not only questioning a player's skills or technique, but going for the more personal allegation that they lack "heart" or that they're mentally weak...

    The Art of Appealling

I think this whole thing has probably been mischaracterised as an issue of "over-appealing", when in reality, it's about dissent. I'm not that worried about a bowler expressing disappointment when a shout gets turned down, it's a perfectly natural reaction, and they're human beings. Or when...

A Tribute to Anil Kumble-For Completing 100 Tests

Congrats to Kumble - certainly the stats SJS highlighted the other day told the story of a quite underrated player. I'm also of the opinion that he should have been playing in the Super Series test, and I'm convinced that the desire to have a NZ player represented somehow was the sole reason...

Cricketer you'd most like to be mates with

Well, of current Aussie cricketers, it might seem a strange choice, but Glen McGrath's always seemed a fairly nice guy to me. I know his behaviour on the field hasn't always been the best, but he does have a rep for being quite a jovial, friendly guy off it. His wife also seems nice and...

    Most beautiful Cricket Grounds

Yeah - there's always been something magical about the green roofing at the SCG in the night-time, particularly when there's a sunset behind them.

Does Ponting own the game of cricket??

To me, Ponting comes off as jumpy, nervous, and unsure of himself, and I'm sure that's what's behind some of his angry displays, particularly towards the umpires. The other night was a case in point - if he was that desperate about having more time in the fading light, he should have declared...

Does Australia really need an all-rounder?

Does Australia really need an all-rounder? No. Do they desperately want one of Flintoff quality? Obviously. But until such a player presents themselves (and I really don't think either Symonds OR Watson is that player), let's just play our best specialists. If an all-rounder falls into one...

    Shabbir cops 12 months

Well, this makes sense to me. If somebody's done remedial work and they've shown they can operate within the tolerance levels, I think there have to be substantial consequences to going out in a game and transgressing again. The system at present is far from perfect, and it won't be properly...

    ***Official*** South Africa in Australia

I think the generalisation you're making is pointless - but I'm pretty nervous about what might have been said in the crowd. Does anybody who was there have any idea what the chants were? We really don't need these idiots anywhere, let alone the cricket.

    ***Official*** South Africa in Australia

Well, I don't think Ponting's decision to nurse Hodge to his double hundred cost the match - but it was quite unnecessary, just like the call to bat on to a 560 or so lead when Martyn was nursed to a century last year at Perth (that Pakistan was bundled out for 70-odd by a rampant McGrath...

    ***Official*** South Africa in Australia

Well, I'm gonna stick my neck out out and say the Saffies are gone. Excellent stuff from Hodge and Hussey, and I really hope Hodge makes his century tonight - six overs to go and he's 87(!) as I write this. Certainly the middle order is starting to look a bit less fragile. What I'd really...

    ***Official*** South Africa in Australia

This will be a much better test of Hodge and Hussey's abilities than the largely toothless WI attack. I'll also be interested in how Symonds goes, because although I don't think he's a great long-term test prospect, he does seem to cope fairly well when a match is in a pressure situation.
