The no-ball call in Wellington was contentious because it happened well after the event (in effect, when the ball was dead) and on the advice of the 3rd umpire.

Whilst Im prepared to give Ponting the benefit of the doubt and assume that he was questioning whether this was within the rules, the whole incident would have been avoided had there been the requisite no. of players in the ring in the first place.

How could you not like Gilchrist? I love the way he's such a great cricketer but remains modest. A very good role model. That's right - a good role model - something the English team doesn't have :D

And with Ponting.. yeah, he does have a tendency to dispute decisions excessively, but so what? The bad light call last night was warranted, he hadn't been given the option to bring on another spinner (Symonds, or even Hodge), a decision which could allow South Africa to hold out for a draw.

Also, the whole practice of bringing a specialist fielder on as a sub is low. Very low, and it's funny that the MCC consider Ricky Ponting's bat against the spirit of the game, yet this practice somehow avoids the radar..

Well why did Hogg field yesterday when Langer couldn't take the field? He wasn't 12th man, Stuart Clark was.

I was disapointed that Punter did not get told off for his quick walking on one spot *cant remember which day it was), so they could get in an extra over in.

Err... what's wrong with that? If anything that's good, as over rates are far too slow these days.

To me, Ponting comes off as jumpy, nervous, and unsure of himself, and I'm sure that's what's behind some of his angry displays, particularly towards the umpires. The other night was a case in point - if he was that desperate about having more time in the fading light, he should have declared an hour earlier.

He's one of the more demonstrative captains I've seen when it comes to communicating his lack of surety and his own tension at the state of a game. I remember reading that Sanath Jayasuriya was apparently very insecure about his fortunes as Sri Lankan captain, and quite high strung, but it seemed that was more evident in comments he made to those around him than on the field. Richie Richardson and Wasim Akram kinda struck me as very tense and easy to anger at times.

He's not the worst captain around, but his conservatism seems to betray a lack of confidence in his bowlers (occasionally justified, but he does have Glen McGrath and Shane Warne at his disposal, and Brett Lee is rapidly improving at test level), and his refusal to enforce follow-ons is sometimes quite surprising. Can't see him sending the opposition in for a good while, either.

As to him being disliked in general (particularly outside Australia, but I certainly know plenty of Aussies that aren't that fond of him) - well, apart from his whining, he looks kinda chimpy. :)

Good work.

Anyway, with Ponting, I've always thought that he lacks maturity. To me anyway, he's always come across as a boy, rather than a mature man. He lacks the maturity - and Im not necessarily talking about cricket maturity - that Taylor, SWaugh and Border had when they assumed the captaincy. I think he's a fairly narrow sort of guy who doesn't have too much idea of things outside of cricket, and all of this shows in the way he carries himself on the field.

I agree mostly with whats been said about Ponting in this thread. I have given him the benefit of the doubt for a long time, hoping he would improve in both his behaviour and his skill at captaincy. But, alas, he has let me down again.

I will defend him on the 'offering the light' call in the First Test vs SAF though, as I think it would have been a show of respect to give the Captain a chance to bring on a spinner. That said, you have to wonder why he handed the ball to Lee in the first place knowing that the light was getting worse.

I think there is a fine line between asking the umpire about a decision, and contesting a decision. One thing that disturbs me is that most umpires will stand there and explain their decision to Ponting...why do they do that? An umpire does not have to explain why he made a decision to anyone. If it ends up being a bad call, then he get roasted in the press and takes the heat from the ICC.

Ponting should be told by the umpire to go back to his position and get on with the game, not stand there and go toe-to-toe with him. Ponting will only do it while the umpires allow him to do it. It is the captains right to ask the umpire a question, but, it's also the umpires right not to discuss his decisions with the captain. I feel they need to stand up to him and remind him who is in charge. That goes for several other captains around the world too.

And btw, we all know how biased the englishmen on this forum are so why argue with them. Only another 12 months until they hand the Ashes back over anyway. Enjoy them while you have them I say.

Ponting owns you all. If I was captain of the Australian cricket team i'd sh*t on the Prime Ministers desk then whinge it was too cold. The guys a champ.

No kidding. I'm guess Pratt is a better fielder than whoever was 12th man for the England team throughout the series (Anderson?). Why did Ponting have a whinge about it if he's going to do the same thing?

The obvious answer is because he's an idiot, but I'll let you answer in your biased wisdom.
