    Massive lol at KP comments

That's the thing though, they're not superstars. They're not morally perfect and they shouldn't be considered "role models" and "heroes" with respect to behavior and morality. If you look at them as if they're human like you or me doing a job then it makes a lot more sense... they're just a lot...

I wonder if cricketers today would remain cricketers if it wasn't as lucrative anymore...

Dire cricketers who had a successful test career

Isn't this thread sort of talking about the same thing? Surely one can't be horrible and still have a successful test career. Or do you mean people who were horrible but played a lot of test matches?

    That's awesome! :o

    ODI Bowlers - E/R V Wickets

True, but where do you draw the line between "Oh that was a wicket-taking delivery" and "Oh, the batsman got himself out?" It's somewhat subjective, no? I still think a balance overall is best.

    Should Matthew Hayden retire?

I bet someone wished that same thing on Dravid too... I can't get over how his average has dropped 6 runs (from 58.5-> 52.5) in basically 2 years. :( IMO, Hayden still retires with 50+... :p

    Mithun Manhas --an usung hero????????

Pretty much seems like the IPL/U-19 world cup gets you a fast track to the Indian ODI side. I wonder when the last time was where we got an ODI debutant who wasn't part of our U-19 efforts, which are impressive to say the least, but it is still one tournament.

    Mithun Manhas --an usung hero????????

I do think older players shouldn't be completely cut from consideration. A lot of older Aussie cricketers have done really well such as Lehmann and Hussey and will be worth the selection even if they end up playing only 40-50 tests rather than 100-110. Rather have a proven talent who plays 40...

cricketers who have made the most of their talent

Statsguru analysis shows only one knock: 10 off 10 deliveries. Against Netherlands in the 1996 World Cup. :D I think what Rich is trying to say though is that he was capable of accelerating if needed. Doesn't mean he had to end up with a S/R of over 100. If a batsman scores 50 off 80 deliveries...

cricketers who have made the most of their talent

I think ultimately we're arguing about semantics. If you replace "technique" with "skill" in my above posts it would mean almost the same thing. Basically, my point is, and the point of the thread, is there are some people who are not as skilled as others. And yet they managed to do well for...

cricketers who have made the most of their talent

Yeah, sometimes I wonder if Chanderpaul can be compared, temperament-wise, to Boycott. I haven't seen much of either player batting, but based on what I've read it could seem that they are more similar than not.

cricketers who have made the most of their talent

Yes you are right, but it's fruitless to argue that people like Bradman and McGrath did not make the most of their talents, because they surely did. Why even talk about this then, might as well head to the record books and list off a list of people with the highest batting averages and the...

And it was all looking so good - Biggest collapses in ODIs

Don't have any numbers on this, but I wonder if Pakistan is the team that has lost the most matches to "minnows" like Bangladesh, Kenya, Zim, etc. Probably followed by India. Both teams seem fairly prone to upsets by weaker teams. By contrast, Sri Lanka is probably the most clinical...

Huge talents who have missed the boat

I think I've read that the pitch Hirwani had immense success on was rather suspect. It's possible that any decent leg spinner could've really troubled batsmen on it, although I can't say for sure. I hardly know the whole story. That said, he just really couldn't break past Kumble, I guess, who...

    How bad are the Windies

Similar to Lara, IMO. In his 131 matches, he has played in 32 wins and about 61 losses... and still managed to emerge one of the best batsmen of all time.

    Best Performance From Each Venue

Turns out in that very same series, match 5, the tie-breaker was the game Ambrose took his deadly 7/1 spell at Perth. http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/australia/engine/match/63594.html Makes for great YouTube viewing. :D

    Best Performance From Each Venue

Speaking of venues, I'm not sure how good this knock actually was in the grand scheme of things - obviously 277 is big stuff - but I read somewhere that Lara named his daughter "Sydney" after this particular knock, which is pretty awesome. :)...

Are India becoming a super-power in cricket?

Harbhajan and Zaheer Khan have also displayed some sort of aptitude with the bat. I think ultimately it must come down to consistency. And fielding. It's kind of funny how many dropped catches and mishaps there were in the Nagpur test - considering we actually won that game!

    Best Performance From Each Venue

Laxman's 281 at Eden Gardens in 2001 v Aus is surely one of the best there, although usually even though I remember a lot of performances in general, I forget where they happened most of the time. Maybe Sehwag's 319 at Chennai vs. SA - the fastest triple hundred in test cricket? Although in the...

    The Great Matthew Hayden

I think any of us making any sort of character judgement about people we hardly know is silly. But then what would be talk about? That said, my thoughts on Hayden, keeping all character judgement aside were made clear earlier. I think he's awesome and beastly.
