England players and selection discussion thread

Buttler currently also makes the cut (average 43). He will unless he's out for 10 or less in this innings; Curran needs to avoid being out for 28 or less. (Other players theoretically could make the cut but they'd need at least 100 to finish).

He's also played fewer Ashes Tests than Botham did.

    Initials Draft

In Round 1, each player picks a letter and names an XI whose names all start with that letter. For simplicity's sake, we'll go by the name under which they're sorted by Cricinfo - so Imtiaz Ali, Ted a'Beckett, Abdul Qadir and Zafar Ansari are all valid 'A' picks but Wasim Akram and Andy Caddick...

Chris Maynard moved from Warwicks to Lancs during the 1982 season - never quite sure why that was allowed (Playfair just says "special registration").

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

From a fairly quick look I think some of the single digit options will give you a decent team, but I'm not convinced any of them will be stronger than the 58 and 27 Test teams.

CW decides the greatest test spinner ever. 43 names: Countdown/Rankings thread

I agree with your first point - I get a bit tired of the assumption that how well a player would do in modern conditions, and arguments like "WG wouldn't cope with modern fast bowling", while you seldom see people arguing that modern batsmen "couldn't cope with the wickets of the 1870s". But...

Harris is in the team (batting higher than normal). There's a case for picking Reid ahead of Voce; Voce at least adds a bit more strength to the long tail.

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I was wondering what's the strongest XI you can make who've all played the same number of Tests (excluding current players). The most experienced is the 58 Test club: Gautam Gambhir Neil McKenzie Syd Gregory John R Reid Asif Iqbal Tony Greig* Prasanna Jayawardene+ Wilfred Rhodes Darren Gough...

In Jim Laker's book "Spinning My Way", he picks his top 5 off-spinners (that he'd seen up to 1957): 1. Athol Rowan 2. Tom Goddard 3. Sonny Ramadhin 4. Hugh Tayfield 5. Ghulam Ahmed

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Stanley Jackson is worth a mention - averaged 48 at a time when players like Trumper, Hill and Ranji were averaging about 40, and adds an extra bowling option. Of course, he'd be easier to judge if he'd been available to play outside England. (And you could argue that it's cheating to pick...
