CW decides the greatest test spinner ever. 43 names: Countdown/Rankings thread

Bear in mind that the bowler has to keep his place in the side for the whole series (or at least most of it), and do a lot of the bowling. Botham (855, 1985 Ashes) got pretty close but no other 80s/90s England pace bowler did. Lillee's also a good guess - he conceded 870 in the 1981 Ashes.

CW decides the greatest test spinner ever. 43 names: Countdown/Rankings thread

One unusual record held by Grimmett - he's the only player to concede more than 1000 runs in a series (1024, 1928-9 Ashes), though Arthur Mailey (999, 1924-5) and Doug Wright (990, 1946-7) both came close. I'd be impressed if anyone could name (without looking it up) the only pace bowler to...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

The 1935 Tests were still 3-day; it was the 1947 series against SA that had 4-day Tests. Then the 1948 Ashes series was 5-day Tests, the 1949 series against NZ was 3-day, and all series after that were 5-day (except the final Tests of the 1972 and 1975 Ashes were 6-day). Also, the final (Oval)...

Yeah, I wasn't very clear there - I meant in the last 3 Tests.

To say Headley "failed" in Australia is harsh - he played one series there, aged 21; he failed in the 1st Test, in the 2nd Test WI were caught on a sticky wicket, in the last 3 Tests he averaged 62. (They weren't especially high scoring matches; Bradman averaged over 100, but no-one else on...

Charles Davis (who's probably as reliable as anyone for this) has Bradman's run rate at 61-62, and Hammond's as 45-46. (The other notable #3 of the era, Headley, was about on a par with Hammond at 44.1) The fastest batsman of that era was Maurice Tate (75-76), who was of course a bowling...

CW decides the greatest test spinner ever. 43 names: Countdown/Rankings thread

I don't think a guy who'd looked good for 2 Tests against England was much evidence that leg-spin could thrive in modern cricket. If anything, Sivaramakrishnan and Bob Holland probably seemed to show that in the 80s leg-spinners could look good for a game or two until the batsmen worked them...
