*Official* Third Test (Headingley, Leeds) 6–10 July

    Ball change worked?

*Official* Third Test (Headingley, Leeds) 6–10 July

One thing that made it a success was having a quality keeper in Foakes who also provided a foil to the more aggressive batsmen.

*Official* Third Test (Headingley, Leeds) 6–10 July

Steve Waugh basically stopped playing the hook shot (much to Ian Chappell's chagrin) and for a period became the number 1 test batsman in the 90's. A boring thing to do but effective.

It reminds me of being a Black Caps supporter in the 90's when our best player Crowe had a chronic knee injury and Waqar and Wasim would run through our brittle line up.

Butler was terrible behind the stumps in the last Ashes now Bairstow. Foakes must hate watching this.

Dropping Foakes maybe England's biggest selection error? The guy played all the games they won and batted pretty well too.

Earlier that year Lee bowled one at 160.8 kph to Craig Cumming in an ODI.

    NZ domestic season 2023/24

A shame 19 yr old Heaphy lost his contract although didn't really fire last season. Hopefully he bounces back.

*Official* Second Test (Lord's, London) 28 June–2 July

That's the argument with situations like that and for a long time with the 'Mankad'. Although, in the Mankad situation the batter is trying to get an unfair advantage by getting a head start so there's less justification for a warning than in this scenario.

Well, he was although you don't expect anyone is going to attempt a 'stumping' after you duck yet another bouncer, scratch the crease and go to do some gardening. But it is a fundamental that you stay in your crease until you're sure the ball is dead. He was on autopilot and just assumed it was.

C'mon imagine if he did it to Ross Taylor! It's a shabby way to get someone out although it's spiced up the series (was it Vaughan saying they were being too nice to each other?).

*Official* Second Test (Lord's, London) 28 June–2 July

Yeah, although the context is he said in his 2015 book and his 2016 MCC lecture that he regretted it. I'll have to pull the book out later but I think it was a kind of turning point for him and when he became captain he had changed his approach.

*Official* Second Test (Lord's, London) 28 June–2 July

Had to look up the MCC laws. The problem for Bairstow is the fielding side have to have regarded it as dead too and they didn't. Where debate arises is whether it's reasonable to consider the ball is in play where a batter has ducked a bouncer, scratched their crease and wandered out to do some...

Jeepers, I turned off after the Bairstow debacle when Stokes was on about 60. Now bringing up a century. Wow.

In his book McCullum said he was embarrassed about it too in hindsight.

Per the article he retired from FC cricket in 2018 after the management (Larsen and Hesson?) said his style wouldn't work in tests. I think Nicholls was averaging about 35 when they picked him over Munro who was averaging around 50? Nicholls did work out pretty well though the first few seasons.

Stead's reasoning is pretty much set out here. And in fairness he did deliver in the 2nd innings where they won at the Basin, which is basically where Stead sees Wagner's strengh. From Wagner's comments it seems he was battling with injuries so presumably they are optimistic with a full winter...

Fantastic news for NZC in terms of access. Did they ever release the viewing numbers for Spark? So many people I knew followed cricket but couldn't be bothered paying on top of Sky.
