Yes; he's a good batsman. I think an average of 45-50 is about where he stands. I think Khawaja is about 50-55 and Voges will likely end up with a 55-60 average based on his start. I'm not saying he's terrible at all, but I don't think he's a 58+ average batsman.
This is not how averages work.

OK, so you think he'll end his career averaging above 58 and be the best since Bradman? I don't. I think he'll suffer a slump in his career and struggle to find runs due to his technical flaws. He's so reliant on amazing hand-eye to be able to get away with how he plays.

Also considering this forum has a number of average watch threads where people predict where a batsman will end up, I'm struggling to see the scandal in what I've posted.

I'll just say that a batsman who averages over 40 in every country and hasn't averaged under 40 in a series for 3 years isn't going to average 45-50 and leave it at that. If you think he's overachieving that's totally fine, blaming it on flat Australian pitches really isn't because he's made tons of runs outside of Australia.

Sure; but he has such a small sample size in most of those countries to date that it only takes one bad test in many instances for those numbers to fall away. I just want to point out all I said is that he's not as good as Khawaja or Voges.

Yeah okay I'm not even gonna attempt to get into another 5 page debate when from the outset you aren't even attempting to engage in good faith.

weird field placings/bowling plans from NZ here

I feel like they've given up too quickly on taking wickets the conventional way

I feared this would happen where McCullum gets carried away with plans rather than just playing good patient cricket. Run rate is escalating after a good spell of line/length bowling that looked to have both these guys under pressure.

Lara, Chanders, Ponting, SWaugh & Richards (just to name a few) didn't have better techniques than Smith and all have test averages over 50

Forget the textbook, look at what Smith does well - still head, full face of the bat, plays very late & to his strengths, insatiable appetite for runs, etc

Combine those with amazing talent and you have a 50+ player

Do you think we are going to bowl Aussie out by plugging away at 5-6th stump with 2 slips 1 gully?

Would be nice to have groundsman to prepare wickets that play to NZ's strengths - more grass - but they won't. Assume they've been asked to make pitches that allow lots of runs in limited over games and have test matches that last into 4th / 5th day. Don't want 3 day tests like Adelaide ...

I don't know. But what they've been doing here it almost feels as though McCullum is saying "we aren't good enough to get these batsmen out with normal good bowling, gonna have to try something crazy and hope we get lucky".

Just need to back your bowlers more IMO

For all the hoopla surrounding McCullum, I have seen nothing in these 5 tests to suggest that he even a half-decent tactician

It's either complete funk or massive defence
