I feel like the Australian selectors have done such a good job this series that there simply has to be a farcical ****up for the 4th test to ruin everything. Something like: they scout the pitch as a green top 3 days out from the game, call up Pattinson and Sayers for his debut and go with an...

Smith declaring would basically do that, but be even better. edit: Damn.

Well yeah, I guess I don't think ideology is a particularly useful word for describing that viewpoint, since basically any stance on pitches other than "any patch of dirt is fine" would be an ideology about pitches, but it probably is. Nevertheless I think it's a fairly broad interpretation of...

I actually think Australia could survive another session. Lead is 44 now, if they could bat another hour it would start to get tricky to chase the runs in the time remaining and I think that's fairly likely. But obviously anything could happen. In other news, why are they still playing. Jesus...

IMO Pune has been the best pitch in this series and it wasn't a particularly great pitch. And honestly I don't think that has anything to do with the results of the game, they just really haven't been particularly good wickets. Winning the toss here and in Bangalore was too much of an advantage...

Haha that appeal from Ashwin. This test needs to end.

This isn't based on much of anything but Kohli just seems like the sort of person who would really hate offering the draw and would delay doing it as long as possible. He should really just offer it though. Jadeja has bowled 90 overs this test ffs. Just let it end.

Well it's not like the pitch turned out to be particularly great... Today has been enjoyable though. Nice to see Marsh put together another good innings, Handscomb turn his series around, and Ishant fall down a bunch of times.

Will be funny if Marsh bats all day and saves the test because next summer Australian cricket fans online will still be reacting with shocked outrage when he gets picked for the test team. Handscomb looking shaky on the back foot against Ashwin. Looks like he could go any ball.

I do rate Renshaw, Smith, Marsh and Handscomb's ability to bat relatively long periods safely so I think a draw is a possibility with a deadbat approach but it's going to be a massive challenge. I know there was a lot of talk earlier in the day about the demoralising nature of bowling 200+ overs...

I wonder how much the runs actually matter tomorrow. Obviously if Australia were 500 behind they'd need to bat the full day to get a draw. As it is they could theoretically bat less and still draw the game but they have to get pretty damn close anyway. Even if they score 100 runs a session...

I think he's fine in similar conditions to Australia, and I can imagine him making Ashes runs too, but he's poor in the subcontinent for sure.

Haha, Kohli. Really hard guy to like as an opposition fan. Really tough out there for the lefties. Going to be a rough day tomorrow.

Guess the plan here is just to play normally and knock the runs off. Normally not something I'd support but for Warner it's probably the right call tbh. Can't see him deadbatting 200 balls so making a run a ball 50 probably helps the team more given runs still count to force a draw. Don't think...

It's actually balls bowled and not overs so that doesn't count in this case. The 1979 case bowled less overs but more balls because they were 8 ball overs.

The last time an Australian bowler bowled more overs than this O'Keefe innings was 1979. Other than that it's all pre-war stuff. You can watch him climb the list here: http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/283419.html

The fact that there's likely to be a bit of swing with the new ball will help India a lot. Chance of an early breakthrough before the spinners take over.

Well India are well ahead so anything could work out. Nevertheless I think getting a big lead and aiming to win by an innings was more likely to result in a win. If/when the set batsmen got out you could still have the tail try and slog a few.

Didn't work for long though. Oh well, a truly epic innings. Don't see people bat for 500+ balls very often. edit: Really think changing a winning formula is kind of silly at this point in the game but you can't necessarily say something like that wouldn't have happened anyway I guess.

Saha trying to up the scoring rate pretty obviously, so they're clearly in the Shane Warne camp more than the armchair CW wisdom camp. Working so far.
