One of the bounciest Indian wickets I can remember.

Some candidates would be: Clive Lloyd in 1974: 636 runs @ 79.50 in 5 tests, two 100s, one 50, top score of 242* Mike Gatting in 1984: 575 runs @ 95.83 in 5 tests, two 100s, one 50, top score of 207 Alistair Cook in 2012: 562 runs @ 80.28 in 4 tests, three 100s, top score of 190 Matthew Hayden...

Yeah obviously you can't read too much into the first 10 overs when only two bowlers have bowled but it honestly seems kinda like a home pitch for Australia. Nice to bat on but I think Cummins and Hazlewood will be pretty good on it as well. But I guess we'll see.

Will be interesting to see if there's turn. Feels like a batting wicket with good bounce and carry right now. Bet Kohli would like it.

    Man, plenty of bounce.

Assuming Smith bats twice in this test he'll play his 100th test innings, and needs 102 runs for the match to have the best average for someone after 100 innings. Incidentally can also have the most runs after 100 innings if he scores 232 runs in the test, though that seems a fair bit less likely.

Seems like a good batting wicket so far. Bit of early movement.

Yeah you're right. Anyway I think Australia's issues with Sandakan weren't that dramatic either, but there were some and I assume that's part of the decision.

I bet there was a time Brett Lee was dropped for Stuart MacGill.

Last time Australia faced a left-arm wrist spinner they were pretty bad I guess? All I can really think of - they expect spinners to be the main threat, which is fair enough, and want some more variety in the spin attack.

Cummins is the one I can imagine making big test scores the most of the three, but Pattinson also looks like a good bat. I'd probably guess Starc was the worst of the three actually, but he's had quite a bit of test batting success so that's perhaps overrating looks vs actual scoring ability...

I remember hearing some speculation during the ODI series where Head was bowling but not Maxwell that it was because Smith etc wanted to get a look at Head's bowling prior to the India tour, maybe considering him as a support batsman/potential number 6. Whereas Maxwell was a known quantity. Felt...

Batted well in the most recent test. But yes he's never really made a test score, just defended well at times.

Might have a reasonable claim at being the best tail in history if it ever played together. Right up there among the best anyway, only real weakness is that the #8, which I think long term would probably be Cummins, might not be at the level of the best 8s. But hard to know how good Cummins...

    Australian Test Selection Thread 2017 - 2018

You're comparing these records to someone who wasn't included in this series because he wasn't deemed to be in the best XI though. Marsh has had a good series and made meaningful contributions in two different tests, without which Australia would have been in a pretty bad spot. He's been the...

Would seem fair to pick him again yes, but let's imagine for example that Marsh and Maxwell both make runs in the next test. Does one of them get dropped for someone who hasn't played in the test side for the best part of a year? If Khawaja has made a bunch of runs in the ODI team or maybe in...

Don't really agree that O'Keefe is just as likely as Lyon to take wickets, especially not at home. Can definitely hold up an end and is a better batsman though. It's a difficult selection situation and I kinda feel like a lot hinges on the champions trophy. Assuming Australia are at least...

Nah, though I feel like there's some contradictory information as the FTP actually says it's a home series vs Bangladesh, at least the original one did. Maybe they've changed that to an away series and scrapped the home one, dunno. But that would also be before the Ashes. So I guess either way...

Yeah, he's the classic Australian fan whipping boy but his numbers in recent years in FC and test cricket are excellent. Especially when, as you say, he's had a much harder time of it than most in terms of when and where he has played. Even just his overall record since returning to the side in...

To be fair Handscomb and Marsh really haven't made that many more runs than Warner. Marsh has made 146 for example to Warner's 131 in the same number of innings. Average of 24 vs 21. That doesn't tell the full story because Marsh has played two innings that are better than anything Warner has...
