The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Sure. I'd imagine a lot of openers loaded up in the 3rd innings as well in games where only a draw was possible, and both bowlers and bats were mainly playing for personal stats. There's also the issue of most games being draws, and it needing to be a low scorer for a result. Games that...

Isn't fewer tons just a result of fewer conversions? Seems like they are the same stat in this case. Even in timeless cricket, I don't think it's a meaningful measure except so far as it's reflected in your batting average. A hundred may, or may not, be better than 2 50s. Even if you think...

Outside of batting average, these stats don't mean much. They should just be reflected in the average. Particularly meaningless in 3 day games. The second innings can be meaningless or a pseudo ODI shoot out. First innings not that far off either under the 100 over rule. Most of ths world's...

Is this a comment on batting averages alone, or was Turner actually better? I have no idea.

Ratings pretty much always reward flash at the expense of functionality. Barry is no doubt benefiting from this. In his case, it might be more understandable than most as we are assessing him primarily on 3 day games where fast striking could be very beneficial. But extrapolating this usefulness...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Even if you are completely convinced of his quality, there are plenty of questions about how good he was in comparison to the other openers. They represent the best and worst of players in these teams. Even if you really rate him, you can't judge him relative to the other openers with any degree...

Flower isn't the same concern as Sanga/AB. Most people leave him out cos they think his keeping was poor. They wouldn't be first picks with the gloves, but are mainly getting left out cos they weren't career keepers.

Ashes will be quite a lot stronger, especially when going in around a bowler lighter than the other 2 teams like you are doing. There's give and take in your selections for Asia and ROW. Very little in it head to head, or on overall balance, other than some unanswered questions in Lindsay and...

Ya, that combination is pretty close (assuming you rate Lindsay high enough for a position in the team). I was looking at the teams featuring full time WKs, who would be a wash on batting, in which case the ROW would start from Sobers.

Not much difference in the specialist bats, but a pretty big difference between the batting the bowlers bring.

Jacques Kallis vs AB de Villiers

I remember CSA saying they wanted AB opening in FC with an eye on the national team. That he opened as early as his FC debut is news to me though. Markram opening is still a mistake. Would have been a terror around 5, but seriously unsuited to opening, and it's not just the hard hands.

Jacques Kallis vs AB de Villiers

He wasn't meant to be an opener. He debutted out of position as one, cos that was there was a gap in viable bats. They likely would have left him there if he had been crazy successful, but it wasn't the.intention.

    Allan Border vs Ravichandran Ashwin

Ya, I think so too. But it is weird how hard a line people draw between ATG and ATVG. The worst ATGs and the best ATVGs are really close in quality, but we often tend to treat the label itself as a big difference.

    Allan Border vs Ravichandran Ashwin

The voting patterns in this thread and the Ash/Boycott one suggest a huge gap between how Border and Boycott are rated.

Jacques Kallis vs AB de Villiers

I don't think he really had strengths or weaknesses against any particular types of bowling in realtion to where other bats of comparable quality typically sat.

Jacques Kallis vs AB de Villiers

Fair enough. It's a definitional thing. I'm not sure whether to call this close when there is a gap like this though. Seems reasonable either way. England is a bit of an anomaly in his record. His record in RSA is spectacular over a huge sample, and it was at worst the second hardest place to...

Jacques Kallis vs AB de Villiers

Kallis by a bit more than difference in their batting averages. Not sure if this should be called close or not.

Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

3 Burger brothers and 2 Kotze brothers all played at least 1 match together for Namibia in the 2005 ICC trophy.

    Denis Compton vs Younis Khan

All fair points. But the standards he faced in test cricket were still above FC, and he is multiple tiers up on performances. Form very much comes into why he isn't rated.
