    Ashwin vs Kumble

Kumble actually did better on the those pitches than he did on the others. He never played Centurion though, which might be the world's worst spin graveyard. I think the length of the games are a major difference between them though. Ashwins games often ended in 3. Kumble's games often went to...

    Ashwin vs Kumble

Those dastardly South Africans, never giving the quicks a chance. :p Expecting a team to outperform the world's best spinners, while bowling at the world's best players of spin is not a good measure of if a ground turns.

    Ashwin vs Kumble

Said the major change for England was covered pitches.

    All-Time South Africa XIs - A re-run

Hard to say. The specialist bats are very weak (other than Roro, who is kinda impossible to judge). But that's serious depth in batting and bowling, and some really good bowlers. Might be stronger than the B team. Or not.

    Ravichandran Ashwin vs Ian Botham

5 fiver fers and 100s vs 4. Sounds pretty close to me:goof:

Is Breitbart your primary source of news?

    Ashwin vs Kumble

Maybe I phrased that unclearly. I meant to say that RSA decks have been sub standard on multiple occasions that India have played there recently. Groundskeepers have not been doing the best job of it recently in general in RSA (a statement that comes with some caveats, like water shortages, and...

    Ashwin vs Kumble

Conditions do change with time. But it's more to do with climate changing than efforts from groundskeepers. England specifically is more to do with covered pitches than anything else. Ya, RSA is very good for seam and bounce on the main 3 pitches, especially in the last few years. Fine by...

    Ashwin vs Kumble

Natural conditions absolutely do play a role in pitches. It's not an accident that similar regions have comparable pitches. I'm of the opinion that people should stop having a waah about both spin and pace friendly pitches. I like both, and variety. Just keep the pitches safe, with even bounce...

    Ashwin vs Kumble

Ah. Sorry, missed that it was NZ I really can't speak for NZ pitches. I have watched almost nothing there. If they are being played on the same grounds, then your stats are making a good point. Doesn't really apply to the RSA grounds though. There are massive differences in how spin friendly...

    Ashwin vs Kumble

Yes. And Indians should be bitching about the pitches they have got. But that's bad luck on getting the times that the groundkeepers screwed up. It's not intentional. RSA don't want 2 day tests, don't want sanctioned pitches, and don't want pitches that we lose on more often.

    Ashwin vs Kumble

IDK about Pak. But India, Bangers, and SL have all played series where they played on zero of the pace friendly grounds. I don't think England have had a single series since readmission when they didn't play on all 3 of the pace grounds. Aus plays the vast majority on the quick grounds too...

    Ashwin vs Kumble

I'm not sure the obvious historical reasons are as obvious as you are assuming. RSA Indians have their roots in RSA many decades before India existed as an independent state. There are some cultural ties, but Indian South Africans aren't that much more attached to India as a country than other...

Gooch vs Gilchrist as test batsman?

And played in a much tougher batting era, and had rougher home conditions.
  15. B

    Ashwin vs Kumble

That's economics. There are 3 grounds that get any kind of crowds in RSA for tests. The big 3 are the only countries that RSA don't lose money on, and unless RSA have a jammed home scedule, they will always play those 3 grounds. Aus and England get extra games at other grounds too when they have...

    Ashwin vs Kumble

IDK about NZ. I haven't seen much of Ashwin in England, but I saw him getting serious rip in 2 of the 3 games I watched. Doubt he has had an unusually rough deal there. Pace is just more effective. RSA is just him playing at grounds that are bad for spin, and the games ending too fast to take...

Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

Andy Zaltzman is on the new season of Taskmaster.

    Peak Botham vs Peak Sobers

Have seen this century/5 fer point raised a bunch of times by Botham fans. I'm not talking about you, but there do seem to be a number of people who really rate Botham and don't think too highly Ashwin. I wonder if we are going to get back pedalling on how meaningful a stat this is. Or on how...

Rank in order as batsmen: Chappell vs Gavaskar vs Richards vs Kallis vs Lara

In theory it should be something close to a wash without info on team strength. I'd take consistency in a strong team more often and rocks/diamonds in a weak one more often. Consistency does indicate ability to score when things are challenging though, when runs are particularly challenging...

Rank these 5 Test openers in order ( Boycott, Greenidge, Hayden, Sehwag, G Smith )

He also faced much worse bowlers in his career, period. It's what playing more matches against more teams will do, as well as playing a high proportion of weak teams. Nobody is denying that the 50s were rough. But it's a low proportion of his career, and a lower proportion of runs. He had a...
