    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

For the people saying Steyn's ER was bad, are you complaining that his average was too high or that he strikes too fast? That's how the maths of ER goes. Unless you think he got hit at the wrong times? Really not the case with him from my memory. He underperformed in a bunch of draws, but he...

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

My comment is not specific to Ambose at all. It's just a principle that applicable to all top bowlers.

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

For a premier bowler, keeping it tight is going to be a far inferior result to taking a bunch of wickets in the vast majority of games. Keeping things tight is a nice consolation prize, but it's still a consolation prize.

Does career length of bats make up for bowler bias?

Na. Most sports have shorter career windows, and a much more defined idea of what constitutes greatness. Everything is stuff like medals and WRs. Cricket has multiple disciplines, and multiple people who can claim at some stage to be the best at that discipline, even when careers overlap.

    Jacques Kallis vs Dale Steyn

You are calling Kallis an AR, but judging him as a specialist. He is very much 4th bowler quality, and 5th in workload. Workload is dictated by team requirements per innings though. A bowler doesn't turn into a specialist bat if the other bowlers blitz the opposition out before they get the...

    Jacques Kallis vs Dale Steyn

A team needs a 4th/5th bowler. He fine at the job, and averaged 30 or 40 more with the bat than the other candidates for most of his career.

England XI vs South Africa XI (since 1990)

I think people underestimate the level of randomness involved in samples this small. Stuff like blockatons from Russell can swing series. It's not that he was a big match bat, or that RSA struggled unusually to close out tight games. Just right innings, right time.

England XI vs South Africa XI (since 1990)

OFC SR matters to how much bowling time the others get. If your first bowler takes 10 wickets from consecutive balls, the rest of the team only bowls 1 over. If they take 100 overs, it's 99 for the team. See the current series for an example. Maharaj has not got to bowl that many many overs cos...

England XI vs South Africa XI (since 1990)

Maharaj is at least as good at ripping opposition apart when things are easy, which is the criterion you are suggesting Swann offers an advantage in. Swann is better at more consistently taking wickets. But a big part of why he took wickets more consistently is Maharaj not getting as much...

England XI vs South Africa XI (since 1990)

They are both finger spinners who relied mainly on flight and turning the ball big in one direction. Very similar bowlers. I rate Swann a bit higher, but it's on account of him being more of a threat when things were not favourable. Maharaj had 4 best innings figures that are better than...

England XI vs South Africa XI (since 1990)

What type of pitch will Swann go hard on that Maharaj won't? They are really similar bowlers.

    Rabada vs Williamson

Kane for longevity. Rabada will probably pull ahead in a couple of years.

    Unpopular Cricket Opinions

You know that, Viv being good against quicks aside, this logic is entirely circular? These guys need to be highly rated cos they are... highly rated.

*Official* South Africa in Bangladesh: Two Test Series, 21-25 Oct, 29 Oct-2 Nov 2024

Anyone know when RSA last had a genuine declaration like this?

    Sanath Jayasuriya VS Jacques Kallis

Not really sure how to rate VDD. Klusener was a full time bowler. He's weak at this level, and I'd probably play Cronje, but a specialist bat is also fine.

    Sanath Jayasuriya VS Jacques Kallis

Gibbs is fine for the middle order if you want him in the team. I'm not playing Kallis. He was a better bat than Gibbs, but I'm not picking this team for that era, and reliability counts for less in an ATG lineup.

    Sanath Jayasuriya VS Jacques Kallis

It's very different in ODIs due to fielding restrictions. Amla was extremely dependent on them due to lack of power and not hitting over the fielders. He has to open.

Vintcent Van Der Bijl vs Eddie Barlow vs Clive Rice

Betting on a guy without a test career being a test GOAT candidate seems like long odds to me. VD Bijl was a million times better in FC, so not impossible, but it's super speculative.

That wasan pretty typical season for him.
