English top-flight referees are mostly very good. You complain about them because they make some stupid mistakes. But then you try to think of a single competition or league, in any country, at any level, where the refereeing isn't significantly worse than the PL. And there just isn't one. ****...

Yeah France were quite clearly better in the game between them. It’s not by a big margin but I would still definitely prefer to play NZ.

    Other stuff

The top level has broadly shifted away from attritional rugby and towards having a good passing game, and that lends itself to dunking harder on minnows.

Jota made contact with him and that’s what made him clip himself. I think Udogie was the one who accidentally initiated that contact. So Jota was unlucky. But it still always gets given as a foul and a yellow.

    Nah Jota clipped him.

The Jones one was borderline and I ****ing hate VAR showing the ref a still photo of a tackle instead of the full incident. You learn nothing about how dangerous it is from a photo. Jota was an obvious red though.

I think it comes more from NZ fans and quasi-neutrals than from their opponents. I can’t imagine ever going into a game against them thinking ‘yeah we’ve got this’ and I’m pretty sure it’s the same for fans of every northern hemisphere team.

It’s a little surreal for Ireland to play the All Blacks with people thinking the most likely reason they’d lose is by choking. Maybe this is the first time you could say that Ireland at their best are as good or better than NZ at their best, but I still think that if we lose it’ll be because we...

I don't have a problem with upgrading a good coach to a great one, but I don't see any obviously better candidates who would be falling over themselves to come to Newcastle. Most of the "proven" managers feel like they're yesterday's men. Someone like De Zerbi could make sense, but if Brighton...

Yeah I agree that he’s improved players but it’s more that the team as a whole plays with such organised intensity. Just looks like a well coached and highly motivated team.

The Chiefs didn’t want to give Hill a big extension and traded him rather than having him kick up a stink then walk for nothing the following year. They didn’t miss him at all at first but they seem to now. And his performances at Miami so far make it look like they got fleeced on the price.

I think Howe is a really good manager. His Bournemouth team only got relegated because of a massive injury crisis that nobody noticed because the players he’d been keeping them up with were complete nobodies.

I thought they still looked pretty bad against Bayern. It's not an especially elite Bayern side. Every team we play against spends the entire second half sauntering into our box with zero pressure.

Running sweepstakes on how many different ways social’s next post will be wrong. Can he beat 5?

Being forced to play rugby felt like class warfare when I was in grammar school, so I’m glad to hear it’s changing.

I’ve no reason to think social’s point about Australian rugby is wrong, but I don’t know why he insists on making it by talking about sporting cultures in other countries that he knows absolutely nothing about.

The Cards spanking a ‘Super Bowl contender’ Cowboys team during a tank season is just wonderful.

Yeah, it is quite popular. It’s just hard to overstate how big a role the GAA plays in Irish society. In some ways it’s replaced the Catholic Church. Lots of people watch and enjoy rugby but it doesn’t have such deep roots.

Well, it just involves redefining what being Irish means so that it's palatable to moderate unionists in the north. There'd need to be a new flag and a new anthem. The Irish language movement would need to go into reverse. Pro-IRA sentiment would need to disappear completely. Essentially the...

Yeah. Its historical base is in the north though, so there’s not really any question of embracing Irish nationalism. And as you say it’s also just not as big a deal. Rugby in Ireland had to develop its own politically neutral identity. It’s why we have Ireland’s Call. It’s a template for what...
