*Official* England in India 2023/24 #CryMoreTour

‘Our spinners suck so we need to pick more spinners’ would be classic Selector Logic.

If England hadn’t decided to pack out the attack with club spinners for some reason they’d be on course to win this one.

Oh man Hartley looks even worse than the scorecard suggested. Hard to watch.

I haven't looked at the numbers and they might suggest that I'm wrong, but I would have said that the Kohli-Pujara-Rohit generation was a bit closer to equally good against spin and pace. The South Africa and Australia teams that won series or tests in the 2000s did it with pace attacks that...

Is Jaiswal usually so dominant against spin? I used to never like packing the lineup with mediocre spinners on a tour to India, because the Dravid-Tendulkar-Laxman generation was so good against them that it more than cancelled out the favourable pitches. That changed a bit when those guys...

Ahh, commiserations. Openly supporting the Browns in 2024 is a massive red flag. I kind of assume anyone who didn’t find a new team in 2022 is a harassment apologist.

The Browns? Do you love *** pests in general or just that one?

I wouldn't mind any of the remaining teams winning it now that the Browns and Cowboys are gone. In soccer every team has toxic fans, and I end up wishing every team could lose. In the NFL every quarterback has toxic haters, and I end up kind of feeling like I want all of them to win.

They’re both such bargain bin options. I’ll laugh if it’s Carrick. Ex-England international getting wildly disproportionate credit for having a Championship side in mid-table? We’ve been here before.

I lost faith in the Palace operation when they hired him full time. Missed opportunity to conduct a proper search for the best coach to develop all their young talent and get him into a decent situation with a full pre-season. I don’t think they’ll go down, but it’s a wasted season and if they...

    Official Rugby Thread

It's a damning indictment of the whole system, right? It's not even like Ireland did anything to unlock his potential. He just rocked up at Connacht and it was immediately obvious that he was one of the best players in the country.

It's strange. Picking up WR as an adult seems borderline impossible, there aren't even many transferable skills from rugby. But he's not really built for anything else.

How did they manage to go from 10-1 to being the worst team in the NFL? Can't wait for the leaks to start.

Why would they have called it off? The quality of football was fine, it’s not particularly dangerous for the players. What was the reasoning?

I think the turgid last half hour in 2002 had more to do with the heat than it did with Sven’s tactics. The second half fade in summer temperatures is an England trademark that’s happened plenty before and since.

If anything I think this one was closer to the type of situation where there could have been a foul with no contact (e.g. when the striker loses balance hurdling a badly mistimed slide tackle).

For me it’s a borderline foul. Without VAR I’d consider DCL a little unlucky to have it given as a free kick. There’s just zero force.

I think it's the worst VAR red card I've seen. I want to know who the **** decided that being gently caressed by a stud is basically genocide.

I think it’s as obvious a foul as you’ll see tbh. In that situation pretty much any contact is a foul. I saw someone suggesting both a penalty and a yellow card for diving, which would be ridiculous but also kinda make sense. The solution has always been for referees to still give penalties for...

Football stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

I read this a while back too and also loved it. You're spot on about the amount of original research that went into it and how it enriches the book. I also thought the thematic structure worked much better than a straight chronology would have. After reading it I tracked it down the Millwall...
