    **Official** English Football Season 2023/24

The CL is just constant awful penalty decisions these days. Pre-VAR it was one of the best sporting competitions in the world and now I rarely even bother watching.

Where do you rank Shivnarine Chanderpaul in all-time best batsmen?

I think ABDV and Root are a bit low. I'd actually have had Joe Root near the top of Tier 2, and I kinda thought that's where most would have had him. I don't think ~any England fans would say KP and Root are on the same level, although that might be because KP is a tier too high.

Football stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

I have fond memories of Cygan. He was an early prototype of a particular type of Arsenal player in the 2000s whose job was to fill opposing fans with hope. Henry or Van Persie would belt in a screamer and you'd start to worry that they'd win something. Then the camera would cut to Almunia...

Tierney's just a decent LB right? I don't remember anyone thinking he was anything more, except maybe some Arsenal fans when he played slightly better than usual for six weeks in his first season.

    Assessment of the World Cup

I thought conditions were quite well balanced in most games I watched. There was a bit of extra movement under lights and pitch disintegration that offset the advantage of the dew.

Do they completely reject probabilistic reasoning? I.e. it increased our chance of relegation from 30% to 80%, which is worth £X million.

    Assessment of the World Cup

I think it was pretty good. The key to enjoying Cricket World Cups is to lower your expectations. The World Cup branding primes people to expect something vaguely on the level of the football World Cup, and it's just nowhere close. It also implies that it's the pinnacle of the sport, but...

Do you know anything about how West Ham settled with Sheffield United over Tevez keeping them up when illegally registered? Sounds like that should've been taken up with the Premier League too.

***Official***THE FINAL- India vs Australia - November 19th - Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad (D/N)

Lol that’s such a harsh umpire’s call, no way that wasn’t hitting the stumps.

Well, maybe 70-30 when I made the post. Tbh it was more egregious when Australia were 60-3. It’s just what run chases are like though. Two wickets and a fielding side win feels inevitable, a 50 run partnership and a chasing side win feels inevitable.

The scoreboard has looked even-ish all game and every time I come in here people are declaring it over for one side or the other.

Who are the neutrals supporting in the final?

This India team is definitely more likeable than Australia, but they're too strong favourites to root for. I'm not too bothered at the moment, but if the commentary is anything like it was for the NZ semi I'll be an honorary Australian by the second innings.

They're actually not a bad team this season, and the three promoted teams and Bournemouth are all absolute dog poo, so they should still stay up pretty comfortably. It is incredibly lucky. Feels like they've been within 10 points of relegation for years.

Cummins helpfully hangs one up for all the men around the bat who aren't there.

What's the deal with defensive fields in ODIs when run rate is a non-factor? Imagine setting this field needing 3 wickets to win a test match.

Gawan Cummins, save a few Starc death overs to give SA a chance.

I’ve kinda been even more impressed by India’s bowling than their batting.

Not a bad innings from KW given the quality of some of the bowling. Mitchell at the other end does kinda show him up though.
