Was Mark Boucher lucky to play almost 150 tests for a top team like South Africa?

Yes imo. I'd have him no higher than fifth in my list of SA Test WK's, and there's a couple from the isolation era I rate higher than him too.

And declare @Red_Ink_Squid the Cricketweb High Inquisitor.

    Peak Botham vs Peak Sobers

No. His bowling rating was 754 the one Test he had 800+ batting for. If we're talking ratings Botham's highest AR rating was 646 after the India Test in 1980. Sobers peaked at 669 after the New Year Test of 1966/67. His rating was also 655 after the 1968 Boxing Day Test.

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

My problem with Miller is that with the ball he was a specialist opening bowler who generally didn't bowl much outside that (there were exceptions). Which of McGrath and Lillee would you take the new ball off to make the most of Miller's bowling, given you're making a big sacrifice with the bat?

Yeah, I can see the appeal. I just don't think it's the best way for Aus to utilise their lavish resources.

Yeah but that's a side that doesn't need to be balanced like that.

It always feels to me like it's weakening a strength to strengthen something that's already strong.

It always upsets me that you could feasibly make a combined Aus/Eng XI from 1955 to the present day that includes no Englishmen. Hayden Simpson/Lawry Ponting Smith Chappell Border Gilchrist Davo/Cummins Warne Lillee McGrath Would be a perfectly reasonable way to go about it imo. Boycott could...

    Peak Botham vs Peak Sobers

If you want Sobers at his closest to a pure all-rounder (i.e. his most successful bowling period) then from the beginning of 1962 up until the New Year Test of 1966/67 Sobers played 22 Tests (actually all the Tests played by the Windies in that time frame so full longevity) and averaged 62.28...

Everyone knows Kiwi ass is the best ass.

    James Anderson vs Clarrie Grimmett

I've been rating Grimmett too low.

    Javed Miandad vs Rahul Dravid

    As you're here. Why?

    Peak Botham vs Peak Sobers

Think Imran was the only other with two for a while iirc. Beefy peaked really well. Just a shame it didn't last.

    Javed Miandad vs Rahul Dravid

Yeah it's close enough I'm tempted to switch. I find it very hard to order these two batsmen in particular, with YK just behind. Root has done enough to be in this class too imo.

    Jacques Kallis vs Ben Stokes

I'd be keen on the @kyear2 view on this.

    Jacques Kallis vs Ben Stokes

Depends which Kallis you are looking at. Think Kallis up until the 2003 English summer would work out as better but he was almost always a change bowler thereafter.
  17. H

    Gooch vs Boycott vs Cook

Yeah. Moderate, but not insignicant gaps between them.

How is Allan Border remembered as a captain?

Imo: 1. Bradman 2. S Smith 3. Border 4. G Chappell 5. Ponting 6. S Waugh 7. Harvey 8. Hayden 9. Simpson 10. Walters Lawry and Clarke very close to Simpson and Walters.

Cash in hand it seems. It would appear James has an operative in Birmingham who will be conducting the deliveries.

Probably only longevity in that tbh. Anwar's average given the era he played is class, particularly as an opener. MoYo mostly made hay in the higher scoring era of the mid noughties. I would tend to still give it to MoYo though, but not by much and I do like two strong openers here, as with the...
