U19 Captain
Graham Gooch. Very balanced all conditions player. Will do well in all era.

Boycott won't work in today's era under Baz-Stokes.

Neither would Cook but I take your point that Gooch is probably the most adaptable of the 3 and the most complete player although IMO Boycott was better actual player at his best.

Gooch bags both longetivity and is way superior against proper pace bowling so he should win, I rate the ability to combat pace higher than ability against spin, though Gooch was proven against spin as well IE Shane Warne.

Boyc beats both.
Who is rated higher by English people in general? Is Gooch still rated that highly?

depends, the casual crowd obviously rates Cook higher as they're both younger and the actual majority. but the more hardcore crowd who'd know more about Gooch or have seen him definitely rate Gooch above Cook from my personal experience. Boycott, well, he's non-existent as a batter to the casual crowd and even to the more dedicated crowd, a lot of perception of him is "amazing batter but a piece of ****".

You look at Boycott's record and it really is something, and then you throw in his technical capability too. Depends whether you take into account his dressing room presence, voluntary absence and scoring rate. But as a pure batter surely it's him?

Gooch's career trajectory is unusual, given how he kept improving with age there has to be an argument for him > Crawley for next summer. Gooch played some of the greatest individual innings I've ever seen by any Englishman. His peaks were extraordinary.

I shall remember Cook primarily for those glorious away series between 2010 and 2013. I think I got annoyed with him in his latter years, long strings of low scores punctuated by cashing in massively when circumstances and conditions were maybe in his favour. Am I being harsh here?

Gooch of course got any in more ways than the other two

Why are you laughing @BazBall21 ?? See, it took Gooch almost 70 years to better than Zak Crawley, despite constantly improving with age

I certainly don't think so. He was very essentially an ordinary player from mid 2013 onwards, although I would say his ton v NZ at Lord's in 2015.was brilliant. Little of his other knocks were anything other than cashing in when the going was in his favour like you say.
